Google Widens AI Search Ads as Search Revenue Growth Slows

Google is expanding English-language AI Mode search ads to 10 more countries. Advertisers cannot opt out of AI Mode ads separately from Search ads.

TL;DR
  • Ad Reach: Google is expanding AI Mode search ads to 10 more countries for English-language searches, extending advertisers’ reach.
  • US Conversations: Ads are also launching on follow-up questions in US AI Mode conversations.
  • Revenue Growth: Search revenue grew 12% year over year in Q3 2026; Google cited currency effects and AI Mode’s weaker ability to generate ad revenue.
  • Campaign Choice: Advertisers cannot buy or exclude AI Mode ad placements separately from Search, although keyword and brand controls still apply.

Google is expanding ads in AI Mode, its conversational search tool, to 10 more countries for English-language searches. The placements let advertisers reach people through products suggested in Google’s answers, even when the original question does not ask for something to buy.

Google parent Alphabet reported Search & other revenue of $63.35 billion for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, up 12% from a year earlier. Yet Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said Search queries grew at their fastest year-over-year rate in five years.

Ads Can Match the Question and the Answer

In Google’s pool-cleaning example, someone asking why their pool is green may receive advice about testing the water, brushing and vacuuming debris. That answer can make ads for pool vacuums or algae treatments relevant.

A direct search for a pool vacuum can also trigger an ad through keyword matching. Reaching someone through the broader pool-cleaning answer requires Google’s AI-powered targeting, which interprets both the question and the answer. Exact and phrase-matched keywords qualify only for searches that already show buying intent.

The matching works in AI Mode conversations and AI Overviews, the generated summaries on ordinary Search results pages. Standard Search ads can also appear above or below those summaries. Paid placements carry a Sponsored label and are visually distinguished from unpaid responses.

New Markets Use Existing Campaigns

The October 28 expansion covers Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. Ads within AI Mode are available in English. Pakistan is limited to text ads. The separate US launch allows ads to appear after follow-up questions in a conversation.

Google announced US AI Mode ad tests in May 2025. By May 2026, it was testing paid recommendations inside AI Mode lists, alongside conversational ads with AI-written product explanations.

Existing Search campaigns, product-focused Shopping campaigns and AI-powered Performance Max campaigns can participate automatically through Google Ads, using their existing budgets. Advertisers cannot buy only AI Mode ad spaces or turn them off separately from Search. Their existing controls for excluding search terms and brands still apply. Normal auction and bidding rules apply, with no separate participation fee.

Some placements also carry short explanations written by Google’s Gemini AI models, drawing on the question, the AI answer and public information such as the advertiser’s website. Those explanations sit apart from the advertiser’s own ad copy. Advertisers cannot write, edit, approve or opt out of them.

Advertisers receive combined performance reports for AI Mode, AI Overviews and ordinary Search ads, without a separate AI Mode breakdown.

More Queries, Slower Revenue Growth

Google Search & other revenue growth slowed from 19% in Q1 to 17% in Q2 and 12% in Q3 2026, each measured against the same quarter a year earlier.

On the October 28 earnings call, Google’s chief business officer, Philipp Schindler, identified currency movements as the largest driver of the slowdown from Q2. He also cited shifts in retail and media ad spending and lower AI Mode monetization, meaning its ability to generate ad revenue.

Google has not specified the monetization comparison or the dollar impact.

Schindler said many AI Mode questions come early in the shopping process and most are additional searches. Reaching those earlier questions gives advertisers more opportunities to introduce products before someone searches for a specific item.

Google also says people click sponsored and unpaid product-list entries in AI Mode at similar rates. The comparison uses Google’s internal US data for August 20 to September 3, 2026, according to Search Engine Journal.

Google plans to add more AI Mode ad markets in Q4 2026, including Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom. Alphabet’s chief financial officer, Anat Ashkenazi, said exchange rates were expected to hold back reported revenue growth slightly more in Q4, assuming they stayed at the levels prevailing on the October 28 call. She also said Q4 growth would be measured against stronger Search revenue a year earlier, making high percentage increases harder to maintain.
