- Device Concept: OpenAI is reportedly developing a portable, screenless ChatGPT speaker with limited mechanical movement.
- Household Functions: Voice, cameras, sensors, email access, and smart-home controls could help the assistant respond and offer information proactively.
- Privacy Controls: OpenAI has not shared details about account boundaries, consent, local processing, data retention, or screenless permission controls.
- Release Targets: A possible 2026 unveiling and 2027 retail release remain changeable, while price and final specifications remain undisclosed.
OpenAI is reportedly building a portable, screenless ChatGPT speaker. Its design could include mechanical elements that move independently.
Proposed ChatGPT functions could probably control smart-home appliances, play media, answer questions, and respond to messages.
OpenAI’s physical interface would put ChatGPT into daily domestic routines rather than confining it to a phone or computer. OpenAI expanded its hardware effort in 2025 when it acquired io for $6.5 billion, bringing former Apple designer Jony Ive’s venture into the company. Designers from io are working with Ive’s LoveFrom design studio on the device since then.
Personal data sits at the center of the idea. Cameras, other sensors, email access, and earlier interactions could help the assistant identify nearby activity and offer information before anyone asks. Those inputs could make hands-free help more useful, but they would also give the device broad awareness of a household and its occupants.
Important questions about consent, account access, local processing will have to be resolved.
What the Device Is Supposed to Do
A rechargeable battery in the device coult let owners carry it between rooms for cooking help, chores, or music.
Voice features are expected to use GPT-Live, OpenAI’s improved conversational voice technology, which can listen and respond at the same time. Spoken cues would need to indicate when the screenless assistant is listening or acting, while household controls must distinguish instructions from casual conversation. Owners would also need an unspecified fallback to review permissions, change accounts, and recover from misunderstood requests.
A camera and other sensors may help the speaker distinguish who is nearby and what is happening around it. Access to a user’s email and interactions could let the assistant anticipate needs and surface reminders before a request. Broad sensing makes account boundaries, input controls, retention review, and safeguards for other household members especially important in shared rooms.
People familiar with OpenAI’s hardware project said the elements are intended to make the speaker feel “more alive”. Small motions could communicate attention or personality, but their range and purpose remain unconfirmed.
A Crowded Category Before OpenAI Ships
OpenAI would enter a category spanning shipping home robots and emerging AI interfaces. Its proposed continuously available assistant also revives earlier privacy and software hurdles involving the device.
Enabot’s EBO X is a self-balancing wheeled companion with voice conversations, a stabilized 4K camera, and Harman audio. Unlike OpenAI’s proposed screenless speaker, EBO X offers full household mobility and has a public price.
Jony Ive and Sam Altman earlier said that the OpenAI device prototype had a release timeline under two years, broadly consistent with a 2027 target. OpenAI may unveil the speaker in 2026 and aims for a 2027 retail release, although both targets may change.
