- Meta VR Glasses: Meta unveiled 100-gram VR glasses for select IMAX-format films and plans to sell them in spring 2027 for US$1,299.99.
- Pocket Computer: The face-worn frame holds displays and sensors, while a cable connects it to a processor and battery in a pocket puck.
- Smaller View: Published specifications give Meta’s glasses a more detailed image center but a smaller viewing area than its Quest 3 headset.
- Disney+ 3D: Meta plans 3D movies on Disney+ in select countries from November 2026, before the new glasses go on sale.
Meta has unveiled glasses-shaped VR hardware for watching selected films in IMAX’s expanded picture format at home. The frame puts about 100 grams on the viewer’s face, while a cable runs to a processor-and-battery puck weighing 300 grams, shifting the remaining load to a pocket.
Micro-OLED screens show the film while passthrough cameras let wearers see their surroundings. Meta says voice, eye tracking and hand gestures can control playback without a handheld controller. The company plans to put the glasses on sale in spring 2027 for US$1,299.99.
A Lighter VR Device for Movie Viewers
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite processor, storage and a battery sit in the pocket unit. Meta rates the battery for up to three hours of high-resolution media playback. Meta says this split is the main reason the glasses weigh one-fifth as much on the face as its earlier Quest 3 headset.
Meta rates the center of the glasses’ micro-OLED image at 37 pixels per degree, a measure of visual detail, comparing to about 25 for Quest 3. Meta’s VR Glasses use 70-by-66-degree field of view, the area filled by the virtual image, against roughly 110 by 96 degrees for Quest 3. The denser center therefore sits inside a smaller viewing window.
IMAX Films and Two Disney Plans
Meta calls the glasses the first IMAX Enhanced certified VR device. It says selected films will use IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio, which reveals a taller picture for scenes made in that format.
Meta separately plans to bring certain 3D films, including Black Panther, to Disney+ subscribers in select countries in November 2026. That is months before the new glasses are due to go on sale.
Industrial Light & Magic says its separate Disney Immersive Cinema app remains in development for the new glasses and the existing Quest 3 and Quest 3S. The film itself stays intact while effects extend into the viewer’s surroundings during key scenes. ILM lists Star Wars: A New Hope among the films for the app.
