Reddit Weighs Tighter Google AI Data Access in Deal Renewal Talks

Reddit is weighing tighter AI data access for Google as the companies discuss renewing their $60 million annual license. Both a cutoff and a rejection of renewal remain possibilities, not final decisions, after details became public on July 22.

A possible renewal of Google’s AI content deal remains under discussion as the annual license approaches its end. Google currently receives a controlled feed of structured Reddit posts and comments for products including its Gemini AI models.

Reddit’s paid-access stance dates to 2024. By June 2025, Reddit was a top source in Google’s AI Overviews, illustrating why a controlled feed of structured Reddit posts and comments matters to AI products.

A reported 8% drop in Reddit shares accompanied the possible restriction becoming public on July 22. Reddit wants partnerships to support its business and recognize the value of its data, while deal-specific Google renewal terms are not public. Tighter access, revised pricing and an extension remain possible outcomes rather than settled decisions.

What Google Gets From Reddit’s Data Feed

Google obtained programmatic access to public posts and comments under the original paid-data agreement signed in February 2024. Its terms reflected Reddit’s insistence that technology companies pay for data use. A programmatic feed lets Google receive organized data directly rather than relying only on scraping ordinary public web pages.

Google gained real-time, structured access that supports displays of Reddit material, product improvements and model training. Model training uses examples to shape an AI system’s learned behavior. Organized data supplies fresher information and enhanced signals, reducing the work required to ingest conversations and helping products reflect newer language.

Because the Data API supplies organized content, structured delivery gives Google’s systems a consistent route for posts and comments instead of requiring each product to gather the same material separately. Defined purposes and permissions can make that access more predictable for product teams. Delivery speed and structure have operational value beyond the raw availability of public text.

Google can use the feed both to improve models and to display Reddit material in its products. Those uses depend on organized delivery, while access to public crawlable pages operates through a separate mechanism.

Because commercial use requires Reddit’s approval, Reddit retained control over the licensed feed. Reddit can tie permission to purpose and contract terms, then price automated commercial access. 

Even if Reddit narrows paid API access, Google’s 2024 terms did not change crawlable-content use for indexing, training or display. A restriction could reduce Gemini’s structured stream of Reddit data without removing every public Reddit page from Google’s systems. Revised terms could change price, permitted purposes, delivery speed or data structure, while slower or less organized delivery could affect freshness and processing work.

Reddit’s Leverage and the Next Test

AI-generated answers have intensified disputes over publisher compensation and traffic, with earlier research finding AI summaries reducing referral clicks. Reddit entered the talks after first-quarter 2026 revenue was reported 69% higher year over year at $663 million, while earnings per share reached $1.01 against an expected 58 cents. Referral pressure has not been established as the cause of Reddit’s position, and the Google partnership remains important to Reddit.

In 2025, the company pushed for dynamic pricing that could tie compensation more closely to the value Google receives. Reddit’s leverage comes from controlling the delivery channel and its permission rules, while public crawling does not reproduce the API’s structure, freshness or contractually defined uses. A higher price could buy predictable delivery, while tighter conditions or usage-based payments could protect Reddit’s control without surrendering licensing income.

Reddit will report second-quarter results on July 30. Leadership will then probalbly clarify whether the structured feed will continue, although the results call does not guarantee a licensing announcement.
