Stability AI Launches Stable Fast 3D Model for Rapid Image Generation

Stability AI says Stable Fast 3D generates high-quality 3D assets from a single image in 0.5 seconds, outperforming previous iterations.

Stability AI has unveiled Stable Fast 3D, a breakthrough AI model capable of producing 3D images from a single input image in just 0.5 seconds. The new technology reduces image processing time dramatically, improving upon earlier models which took several minutes.

Technological Advancements and Capabilities

Stable Fast 3D represents an advancement over the previous TripoSR model developed alongside 3D modeling firm Trip AI. Stability’s model employs an advanced transformer network to generate high-resolution triplanes, creating detailed 3D volumetric representations from input images. Capable of handling higher resolutions effectively, the model minimizes aliasing artifacts and manages computational complexity efficiently.

Researchers emphasize new techniques in material and illumination estimation within the model. A probabilistic method for estimating global metallic and roughness values enhances the consistency and quality of the generated images. The model also integrates essential 3D elements—such as mesh, textures, and material properties—into a unified, ready-to-use 3D asset.

Applications Across Sectors

Stability AI anticipates practical uses for Stable Fast 3D in various fields, including design, architecture, retail, VR, and gaming. It is available via the Stability AI’s Stable Assistant chatbot, the Stability AI API, and can be accessed through a community license on the Hugging Face platform.

Since November 2023, Stability AI has been improving in the area of 3D image generation, starting with Stable 3D. In March, they released Stable Video 3D for enhanced camera panning and image generation. Recently, they unveiled Stable Video 4D, which adds short 3D video creation by incorporating the time dimension.

User Accessibility and Additional Features

By uploading a single image, users can rapidly obtain a comprehensive 3D asset, including UV unwrapped mesh, material parameters, albedo colors, and optional remeshing. Minimal processing time—just 100-200ms additional for remeshing—makes it a valuable tool for 3D prototyping, useful for both large companies and independent developers in gaming, VR, retail, and architecture.

With a generation time of just 0.5 seconds for 3D assets using a GPU with 7GB VRAM, Stable Fast 3D significantly outpaces competitors. The model delivers high-quality textures with reduced illumination artifacts and additional material parameters, standing out from previous models like SV3D, which took much longer for similar tasks.

Licensing and Community Engagement

The Stable Fast 3D model code is published on GitHub, with model weights and demos accessible on Hugging Face. Released under the Stability AI Community License, the model supports non-commercial usage freely and allows commercial use for entities with under $1M in annual revenue. For larger enterprises, Stability AI offers specialized licensing. The model can also be accessed through the API and Stable Assistant.

Stability is not the only AI company making improvements of 3D model generation. This month, Meta Platforms launched Meta Gen 3D, which can create 3D assets quickly. Meta 3D Gen is a system capable of generating intricate 3D assets complete with detailed textures and material maps.

Leveraging physically-based rendering, the system produces assets with realistic lighting interactions. Its generative retexturing function enables users to modify the appearance of existing 3D models. Comprised of Meta 3D AssetGen and Meta 3D TextureGen modules, the system transforms textual descriptions into comprehensive 3D meshes and corresponding textures, resulting in visually compelling and contextually appropriate assets.
