Azure Site Recovery is primarily Microsoft’s disaster recovery service. Although it has historically supported migration scenarios, Microsoft now recommends Azure Migrate’s Migration and modernization tooling for server migrations.

The correct combination depends on the existing infrastructure, volume of data, acceptable downtime and final Azure environment.

4. Test Before the Actual Migration

A test migration should be carried out before production workloads are moved wherever the chosen migration approach supports it.

Testing allows teams to validate application functionality, performance, security and network configurations without immediately disrupting the production environment.

This stage can uncover problems that were not obvious during the initial Azure Migrate assessments.

Teams should test areas including:

  • Application functionality
  • Database connectivity
  • Application dependencies
  • User access
  • Network connectivity
  • Performance
  • Security controls
  • Backup and disaster recovery

For web apps, this may also involve checking whether applications can be modernised for Azure App Service or Azure Kubernetes Service rather than simply recreating their existing infrastructure.

5. Optimisation and Governance

A successful migration does not finish when workloads start running in the Azure cloud.

The new environment needs to be monitored, governed and continually optimised.

Azure Advisor can provide recommendations relating to areas such as cost, reliability, security, performance and operational efficiency. Azure Policy can also help organisations apply governance requirements consistently across Azure resources.

Cost tracking is equally important.

Resources that were appropriately sized during the initial assessment may change as usage patterns develop. Reviewing utilisation, removing unnecessary resources and applying suitable Azure pricing options can generate further cost savings over time.

Governance should also cover security and regulatory requirements. Microsoft Azure provides a broad range of compliance capabilities and supports organisations working under regulatory frameworks including GDPR, but organisations remain responsible for configuring and operating their cloud environment appropriately.

Azure Migrate helps bring several stages of migration and modernization into a central hub.

It can be used to discover infrastructure, assess workloads, analyse dependencies and plan migrations. Azure Migrate assessments can also calculate Azure readiness, recommend target services and provide estimated monthly resource costs.

Which workloads are ready? What Azure resources will they require? What might they cost? Which applications have dependencies? Which systems should be migrated together?

Building a Successful Azure Migration Plan

Moving to Microsoft Azure can deliver significant benefits, including reduced dependence on physical infrastructure, greater scalability and opportunities to modernise applications and databases.

Those benefits are not automatic.

A successful migration requires a structured approach based on discovery, assessment, planning, testing and continuous optimisation. Organisations should establish their Azure environment and landing zone, understand their on-premises workloads and determine the appropriate migration strategy for each application before moving production systems.

Azure Migrate, Azure Database Migration Service, Azure Data Box and the wider Microsoft Azure platform provide tools for different stages of this process. The technology, however, still needs to sit behind a clear migration plan.

By assessing technical readiness, analysing dependencies, estimating costs and testing workloads before cutover, businesses can make the transition to Azure with fewer surprises and build a cloud environment that supports their long-term migration and modernization goals.
