- Luna Access: Prime members with Fire TV in the US and UK can now play Luna inside Prime Video.
- Xbox Test: Xbox Insiders can stream selected games they own for free after ads, with one-hour sessions.
- Strategy Split: Amazon is testing game visibility, while Microsoft is testing whether owners accept ads and time limits.
- Rollout Limits: Neither approach has proven broader adoption, and Amazon has not scheduled support for additional devices or countries.
Amazon put its cloud-gaming service Luna inside the Prime Video app on Fire TV in the US and UK. On July 23, Xbox opened an optional Insider test for ad-supported streaming of selected digital games already in a user’s library. Luna carries no additional charge, while members of Microsoft’s opt-in Xbox preview program can stream games they own for free with ads in one-hour sessions across supported devices and regions.
Cloud gaming renders software on remote servers, then sends video and controls over an internet connection to a user’s screen. Amazon is testing visibility inside a familiar video app, while Microsoft is testing whether game owners will accept ads and time limits instead of another streaming fee. Microsoft’s trial covers selected digital purchases, not the Xbox Game Pass subscription catalog.
Earlier eligibility plans covered digital game owners without Game Pass. Neither access change has established sustained use, and Microsoft has not published participation or player-response figures.
Prime Video Becomes Luna’s Storefront
Prime members open a Games tab in Prime Video, choose a Luna title, and play with a controller or a phone used as one. Games sit beside shows, films, and sports that Fire TV viewers already browse. Initial access remains limited to two countries, and Amazon says it plans to add more devices, countries, and titles without a schedule.
Party games and familiar properties such as Harry Potter and Tomb Raider fit Amazon’s intended audience. Prime Video gives viewers a place to find games, while the phone-controller option reduces the hardware needed to try a title. Focusing on people without dedicated gaming hardware favors casual play rather than replacing consoles and gaming PCs.
Jeff Gattis, Amazon’s general manager of gaming, said Luna has millions of users in the United States and 13 other countries and aims for 10 million to 20 million.
Luna launched commercially in the United States in March 2022 and expanded to the UK, Germany, and Canada in March 2022. Prime Video access is narrower, reaching Fire TV users in only the US and UK at launch.
Fire TV and regional limits make the rollout a bounded test of whether placement changes user behavior. Two countries and one device family cannot establish wider demand, but usage can guide Amazon’s planned expansion.
Xbox Trades Ads for Access
Xbox’s optional test makes a different bargain. Insiders watch ads before each session, while gameplay remains unchanged. Sessions can last one hour across eligible devices and regions, allowing participation to indicate whether game owners consider that exchange acceptable.
Microsoft argues that pre-session advertising can lower access costs, but the test provides no evidence yet about user acceptance. Selected owned games, rather than the Game Pass catalog, define the test. Xbox presents it as a lower-cost route on existing hardware, including older consoles streaming Xbox Series X|S games.
Remote rendering can let an Xbox One play titles built for Microsoft’s current Xbox console generation without putting the subscription catalog behind advertisements. An Xbox account is required, and free access applies only during the optional test period.
Microsoft had considered advertising-funded cloud access for markets where consoles were less prevalent by 2023. An earlier proposal included one-hour session limits for digital game owners before Xbox began the Insider test. Xbox’s Insider trial remains limited: it is neither a permanent free tier nor an advertising-funded Game Pass offering.
Amazon’s October 2025 GameNight for Prime members emphasized casual group play, and its Prime Video integration now places games beside movies and shows. Nvidia GeForce NOW and Sony’s PlayStation cloud streaming remain alternatives, but Amazon and Xbox are changing how potential players find or pay for remote access rather than introducing a new rendering method. Amazon is betting on placement, while Microsoft is asking whether owned-game customers will accept ads and time limits; participation will test both approaches as Amazon’s unscheduled device expansion leaves members without Fire TV excluded.
