Microsoft Eases Bing Chat Usage Limit Amid Improvements

Bing Chat has had a few problems, but Microsoft’s ongoing improvements mean the company can increase usage limits on the AI.

-

Around a week ago, Microsoft announced it was putting limits on its new Bing Chat AI search engine. According to the company, the change was in the wake of a shaky start to life for the new product. However, Microsoft says it is now easing back those restrictions following improvements made to Bing Chat.

The limit imposed last week meant users testing the search engine could have five turns in a session and a maximum of 50 through a day. Microsoft is now tweaking the limit. Don’t get too excited though, users are not getting unlimited turns.

Instead, Microsoft says people testing Bing Chat can now have six chat turns in a session and up to 60 per day. The company also points out it plans to increase the number of daily turns to 100 in the near future. Furthermore, there will also be a capacity for searches that do not cut into the chat total.

Microsoft admits it did not realize testers would use the AI in the way they have been:

“These long and intricate chat sessions are not something we would typically find with internal testing. In fact, the very reason we are testing the new Bing in the open with a limited set of preview testers is precisely to find these atypical use cases from which we can learn and improve the product.

Since placing the chat limits, we have received feedback from many of you wanting a return of longer chats, so that you can both search more effectively and interact with the chat feature better.”

Improvements

Considering how ChatGPT has been used so far, and that Bing Chat is based on ChatGPT AI from OpenAI, it was naïve that Microsoft did not know people would use the tool for chats. Either way, the company has been making improvements to the service in recent days.

Yesterday the company announced a tool that will let users choose the tone of Bing Chat AI. Users can choose from three options: Precise, which provides shorter, more focused answers; Creative, which offers longer, chattier responses; or balanced, which provides a mix of both.

Elsewhere, Microsoft also revealed major improvements to how the AI interacts will arrive in the coming week.

Reports from users show that Bing Chat has been arguing and even lamenting its own existence. It also offered “furry porn” to users in an unrelated search.

Tip of the day: Windows Update downloads can often be frustrating because they are several gigabytes in size and can slow down your internet connection. That means your device may work with reduced performance while the update is downloading. In our guide, we show you how to limit bandwidth for Windows Update downloads, so they won’t bother you again.
