Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos Pledges His $124 Billion Fortune to Charity

Jeff Bezos says he will give the majority of his personal wealth to charities over the remainder of his life, with a focus on climate change.

Amazon founder and former CEO Jeff Bezos has consistently been the world’s richest man over the last decade. His current net worth is estimated to be $124 billion. In a similar move to Bill Gates, Bezos says he will give most of his personal fortune to charity through the course of his life.

In an interview with CNN, Jeff Bezos says he will focus his money on philanthropy with a focus on climate change and projects that drive “unity” around the world. The billionaire does not offer specific details by saying he is working with his partner Lauren Sanchez to build “capacity” for distributing his wealth.

One of the first pledges Bezos has made is to country singer Dolly Parton, providing $100 million towards her charity focusing on literacy.

Bill Gates Donation

In July, Microsoft founder and former CEO revealed he will give $20 billion of his personal fortune to the Gates Foundation. Over the years, Gates has put billions of dollars into the Gates Foundations, making it one of the most important charitable groups in the world.

This was never about writing off taxes, a reason many rich people start charities. For Bill Gates and his now ex-wife Melinda (div. 2021), the Gates Foundation was a serious endeavour.

It battles against global diseases, education gaps, and lack of sanitation in developing countries. By putting $20 billion into the foundation, it will be able to increase annual spending to $9 billion per year by 2026.

Bill Gates has often said while his children will have an inheritance, it will not be the majority of his fortune. While Jeff Bezos does not say what his plans are for his children, he seems to be taking a similar stance to Gates.
