How to Completely Uninstall Microsoft Office via Settings or the Official Removal Tool

's Office suite is an incredibly useful tool, but it isn't infallible. At times, you'll run into bugs that don't have an easy fix. In such cases, it may be necessary to uninstall Microsoft completely.

Typically, the steps to remove Office are simple. The program files menu offers a basic visual interface that gets you there in just a few clicks.

However, there are instances where this sadly isn't possible. Some users, for example, report serious problems with versions after a update or installing a technical issue.

In these cases, you may want to use an Office removal tool. This will allow you to uninstall Office if you're getting an error and will ensure every last trace is gone from your system. Here's how to uninstall Office via both methods:

Uninstall Office 365, Office 2016, or Office 2013 via Windows 10 Settings

You may already know how to uninstall programs via this way but it's worth running through the steps again. Often, users only install the Office application they're having problems with, when in reality you may need to remove Office in its entirety.

These steps hold whether you're looking to uninstall Office 365, Office 2020, Office 2016, Office 2013, or any other version. Simply look for the relevant name in your Apps menu.
  1. Open settings


    Press the “Start” button to open the Start menu, then click the settings cog in the bottom left corner, above your power button.

  2. Click “Apps” in the settings window

  3. Remove Office via the Apps and features menu

    On the left-hand side of your Settings window, look for a heading called “Apps & features”. Select it, then scroll down the list of apps until you find your Office 365, Office 2016, or Office 2013 install.

    Click “Uninstall”, then press “Uninstall” again to remove the Office suite.

How to Uninstall Microsoft Office with an Office Removal Tool

As mentioned earlier, uninstalling Office 365 isn't always so easy. If you're running into an error with the apps menu, you'll want to use an Office removal tool instead. There are various options in this regard. Third-party Office cleanup tools, Office 2016 removal tools, and more.

However, we always caution using tools that aren't widely known or verified by Microsoft. In this case, there's an official Microsoft Office uninstall tool – the Support and Recovery Assistant. You can find the Office removal tool download here. Run “SetupProud_OffScrub.exe” to get started.
  1. Install the Microsoft Office uninstall tool

    Press “Install” when the security warning pops up.

  2. Click “I agree” after reading the terms of service

  3. Tick your Office products

    The Office removal tool will run a scan and return “Microsoft Office products” if you have any installed. Tick this box and press “Next” to begin Office removal.

  4. Confirm the uninstallation

    Tick the box to confirm that you have saved all of your work and closed your Office applications, then click “Next”.

  5. Press “Restart”
