Google announced an updated version of its Gemini 2.5 Pro artificial intelligence model today, branding it the “I/O Edition” and highlighting substantially improved coding abilities.
Citing “overwhelming enthusiasm,” the company released the update ahead of its planned debut at the Google I/O conference, making it available immediately through the Gemini API and the consumer-facing Gemini app. Google I/O is scheduled for May 20-21 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, with the main keynote set for 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET on the first day.

, aims to provide a noticeable step up in coding-related tasks. Google highlighted advancements in areas such as transforming existing code, editing codebases, and constructing complex, multi-step agentic workflows. The company specifically pointed to better performance in front-end and user interface development.
This focus appears validated by the model’s ascent to the top position on the WebDev Arena Leaderboard, a benchmark gauging human preference for AI-generated web applications, where it reportedly surpassed the previous #1 by 147 Elo points after previously holding the #2 spot. Further metrics shared by Google include an improvement in the LiveCodeBench v5 code generation test, where its score rose from 70.4% (as reported for the previous Gemini 2.5 Pro version) to 75.6%.
Enhanced Coding and Developer Feedback
Google frames the “I/O Edition” as a strategic move to make advanced AI coding tools more accessible to developers before larger platform updates expected at the conference.
Google’s announcement included endorsements from industry partners. “We found Gemini 2.5 Pro to be the best frontier model when it comes to ‘capability over latency’ ratio,” stated Michele Catasta, President at Replit.
Silas Alberti of Cognition’s founding team remarked, “The updated Gemini 2.5 Pro achieves leading performance on our junior-dev evals… It felt like a more senior developer because it was able to make correct judgement calls and choose good abstractions.”
Developers using the updated model are also expected to experience fewer errors in function calling and improved trigger rates, according to Google. Early hands-on impressions noted by The Verge suggest this improved function calling handles more complex, multi-turn conversational coding tasks with greater reliability than the March preview.
Beyond code generation, the “I/O Edition” maintains strong performance in video understanding, scoring 84.8% on the VideoMME benchmark. Google showcased this by detailing how the Video to Learning App in Google AI Studio can now create more functional interactive learning applications from a YouTube video.
Other examples of its application include the Gemini 95 starter app, where the model can assist in adding new features like a video player while adhering to the existing application style, and a new dictation starter app that demonstrates the model’s ability to generate both functional code and aesthetic UI elements, including animations.
Capabilities Beyond Code Generation
The Gemini 2.5 Pro models are built on a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) Transformer architecture, a design intended for efficiency by only activating necessary parts of the model for a given task.
They feature a large 1 million token context window, allowing them to process extensive inputs like entire books or codebases. This architecture also supports native multimodal capabilities, processing text, images, video, and code.
Gemini 2.5 Pro shows a strong ability to understand PDF layouts for citations, Google’s own documentation cautions that “Spatial reasoning” remains a limitation, noting models “aren’t precise at locating text or objects in PDFs.”
This update follows the initial introduction of Gemini 2.5 Pro to subscribers on March 25, and its subsequent rapid rollout to all free users starting March 29. That earlier version already demonstrated strong performance in mathematics (92.0% on AIME 2024) and multimodal tasks (81.7% on MMMU), though it also showed areas where it lagged competitors at the time. The model’s knowledge cut-off remains January 2025, according to its model card.
Release Context and Transparency Questions
The release of the Gemini 2.5 series has not been without scrutiny, particularly concerning the timing of safety documentation. The initial model card for Gemini 2.5 Pro was published around April 16, weeks after its wide public availability.
This led to criticism from AI governance specialists like Kevin Bankston at the Center for Democracy and Technology, who called the documentation “meager” and worried about a potential “race to the bottom on AI safety and transparency as companies rush their models to market.”
Google’s stated policy in the model card is that, “A detailed technical report will be published once per model family’s release…after the 2.5 series is made generally available,” with separate reports on dangerous capability evaluations following at “regular cadences.”
While the model card mentioned internal safety reviews and mitigations, it lacked specific results from tests like red-teaming. While the WebDev Arena success is notable, some AI researchers, according to MIT Technology Review, have pointed out the ongoing need for more diverse and standardized benchmarks for “agentic coding workflows” to comprehensively assess models in complex software development scenarios.
The “I/O Edition” of Gemini 2.5 Pro is distinct from Gemini 2.5 Flash, a model previewed on April 18, which is tailored for speed and cost-efficiency. Google has also indicated plans for on-premises deployment of Gemini models via Google Distributed Cloud starting in Q3 2025. The current “I/O Edition” update maintains the existing pricing structure for Gemini 2.5 Pro access via the API and is available now in the Google AI Studio and Vertex AI.
