Alibaba has upgraded its Quark AI assistant by integrating its proprietary Qwen advanced reasoning models, enhancing the assistant’s capacity to process complex queries and deliver contextual, multi-layered responses.
Originally launched in 2016 as a web browser, Quark has evolved into an AI-powered information services platform with over 200 million users in China.
The latest version, available via apps for iOS, Android, Windows and macOS, integrates advanced features such as deep thinking, task execution, and research functionalities into a user-friendly interface.
The update aligns with Alibaba’s broader strategy to embed artificial intelligence across its platforms and expand its AI infrastructure and foundational models over the next three years.

The new Quark iteration extends beyond traditional chatbot functions. Users can now conduct academic research, draft documents, generate visuals, plan travel itineraries, and access preliminary medical information.

The Quark upgrade is part of Alibaba’s wider investment in AI. The company has committed to investing RMB 380 billion (approximately US $53 billion) into AI and cloud infrastructure over the next three years, reinforcing its strategy to expand foundational models and integrate AI technologies across various consumer and enterprise products.

Qwen Models as the Foundation for Quark’s Transformation
The Qwen model’s integration into Quark is the latest step in Alibaba’s evolving AI portfolio. In January Alibaba introduced the Qwen 2.5 model, capable of processing context inputs of up to one million tokens. This multimodal model allows for the analysis of extensive datasets across text, images, and video, enhancing reasoning capabilities in diverse scenarios.
Part of the Qwen series is Qwen 2.5-Max a model designed for complex reasoning and coding tasks. Utilizing a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture, it optimizes computational efficiency by activating only the necessary model components for each task.

Additionally, it incorporates Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) to refine accuracy based on real-world user interactions.
Alibaba just recently expanded its AI model offerings with the QwQ-32B model. This other model was developed for efficient reasoning and coding tasks, offering developers a high-performance option that requires minimal computational resources.
Additionally, the release of the R1-Omni model introduced Alibaba’s foray into emotion recognition AI. This model analyzes human emotions using audio and visual inputs, utilizing Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Reward (RLVR).
This approach ensures that AI systems are only rewarded for outputs that meet strict, predefined accuracy standards, enhancing the reliability of emotion analysis tasks.
Accessibility has been central to Alibaba’s AI approach. In February the company introduced the Wan 2.1 AI video model series as open-source, providing free access to text-to-video and image-to-video generation tools.
Wan 2.1 is optimized for both consumer-grade and enterprise hardware, broadening its potential user base and challenging proprietary solutions like OpenAI’s Sora and Google’s Veo 2.
Last December Alibaba reduced prices for its Qwen-VL visual language models by 85%, making its AI solutions more affordable and accessible, partially triggered by increased domestic competition and from abroad.
