Instagram has introduced a feature aimed at transforming how creators experiment with their content. Known as trial reels, this tool allows users to share videos exclusively with non-followers, offering a private testing ground for new ideas before sharing them with an established audience.

Available globally to professional accounts, trial reels reflect Instagram’s commitment to supporting creators and maintaining its competitive edge in short-form video content.

The feature, initially tested in May, addresses a fundamental challenge for creators—balancing creativity with audience expectations.

By creating a safe space for experimentation, Instagram is providing a solution for users navigating the pressure of consistent engagement.

A Solution to the Pressure of Audience Expectations

Creators often feel confined by the expectations of their followers, particularly when their profiles double as business cards or brand portfolios. Posting unpolished or experimental content risks alienating an audience accustomed to a specific style or theme.

Ashley Alexander, Instagram’s Vice President and Head of Product Management, explained, “We heard from creators that they just don’t always feel comfortable or they’re reluctant to experiment with different types of content because they’ve built up a follower base and they want to make sure they don’t alienate it.”

Alexander further highlighted how trial reels provide a low-risk environment for creators to branch out into new areas, saying, “We hear from the fashion creator that maybe wants to branch into a music career, but they’re kind of scared because their followers have gotten used to getting outfits of the day. If they’re posting a video of themselves singing, they’re worried that they might turn those people off.”

By introducing trial reels, Instagram seeks to encourage creators to take creative risks while protecting their existing audience relationships.

How Trial Reels Work

The functionality of trial reels is straightforward and user-friendly. During the reel creation process, creators can toggle a “Trial” option, ensuring the video bypasses their main profile grid and Reels tab.

These experimental videos are displayed exclusively to non-followers through Instagram’s general Reels feed, providing a fresh and unbiased audience for the content.

Once the reel is published, creators gain access to detailed analytics after 24 hours. Metrics such as views, likes, comments, and shares allow creators to gauge the performance of their trial content.

Based on these insights, they can choose to archive the reel or share it with their followers. Instagram also offers an automated option, enabling creators to transition high-performing trial reels directly to public posts without additional steps.

Alexander emphasized the creative freedom this feature offers, stating, “Creatives have lots of ideas, and one of the worst things that can kill creativity is feeling pressure or feeling like there’s repercussions for taking chances. And we don’t ever want that to feel that way on Instagram.”
