Microsoft has updated its Store app on Windows, delivering a faster interface, better app management tools, and support for a broader range of applications, including legacy Win32 software.
With the updates Microsoft aims to better position the Store as a central hub for app discovery and management, aligning it more closely with the evolving needs of developers and users.
The enhancements, which include reduced launch times, revamped navigation, and an expanded catalog, reflect the company’s commitment to addressing user feedback while positioning itself as a competitor in the app distribution market.
Performance Upgrades Target User Frustrations
One of the most noticeable improvements is the Store’s enhanced performance. Microsoft reports that launch times have been cut by 25%, a change aimed at users who rely on quick access to applications. Additionally, the frequency of download stalls has been halved, resolving a long-standing frustration for many.
To further streamline downloads, a redesigned progress bar now provides real-time updates, including percentage completion, file size, and the ability to cancel an operation directly from the product page.
Win32 App Integration: A Step Toward Inclusivity
For developers and IT professionals, the most impactful update may be the expanded support for Win32 applications. These legacy programs, which rely on the Windows API, are widely used in enterprise environments but were previously underserved by the Store. With the introduction of the Store Web Installer, users can now install Win32 apps directly from a browser, streamlining workflows and bypassing manual installation processes.

New Pages Simplify App Management
Redesigned Library and Updates & Downloads pages provide users with a more organized way to manage their apps. The Library page now displays all apps linked to a user’s Microsoft account, whether installed or not. A search bar has been added to make finding specific apps easier, reflecting Microsoft’s effort to improve usability.
The Updates & Downloads page consolidates all active downloads, pending updates, and recent installations. Importantly, version notes are now included, giving users greater transparency about changes in their applications.
Enhanced Browsing Experience
The Store’s navigation has also been overhauled to make content discovery more intuitive. Apps and games are now categorized into genres, such as strategy and simulation, allowing users to quickly find what they need.

Product pages have been revamped to include immersive visuals. For apps and games with trailers, these videos now serve as headers, while static hero images are used for those without trailers. Users can control autoplay settings for these visuals in the Store’s settings, giving them more control over their browsing experience.
Growing App Catalog
Microsoft’s Store catalog has expanded to include popular platforms such as ChatGPT, World of Warcraft, and Battle.net. These additions reflect the company’s broader goal of appealing to a diverse user base, ranging from productivity-focused professionals to gaming enthusiasts.
In parallel with these updates, Microsoft announced its 2024 Store Awards, highlighting standout apps across categories like AI tools and gaming. This annual recognition aims to draw attention to high-quality applications and encourage developers to contribute to the platform.
