Amazon Challenges Nvidia’s AI Dominance with Ultracluster Supercomputer

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a bold move to reshape the AI hardware market with its Ultracluster supercomputer, a groundbreaking infrastructure project designed to challenge Nvidia’s dominance.

The Ultracluster, codenamed “Project Rainier,” is built using Amazon’s custom chips and is set to become one of the world’s most powerful AI supercomputers to date, reports the Wall Street Journal.

AWS also unveiled its second-generation Trainium2 chips and previewed Trainium3, a next-generation chip promising a fourfold performance increase, slated for release in late 2025. The Ultraserver was also announced as a hardware platform optimized for large-scale AI tasks.

Ultracluster to go Live in 2025

The AWS Ultracluster is planned to go live in 2025, is designed to dramatically enhance the capabilities of Amazon-backed startup Anthropic, one of the strongest competitors of OpenAI.

It will combine Trainium chips with NeuronLink, Amazon’s proprietary interconnect technology that enables high-speed communication across distributed systems.

This architecture allows the Ultracluster to achieve up to 83.2 petaflops of computing power, significantly outpacing Nvidia’s eight-GPU server configurations.

The Ultracluster’s first major customer, Anthropic, stands out not just for its technological ambitions but also for its commitment to AI safety. Anthropic plans to use the Ultracluster to scale its model training fivefold.

With AWS providing the infrastructure backbone, Anthropic aims to develop AI systems aligned with human values, addressing growing concerns about AI safety and transparency.

Annapurna Labs: Amazon’s Innovation Engine

Amazon’s ability to innovate in hardware is deeply rooted in Annapurna Labs, an Israeli microelectronics firm acquired by the company in 2015 for $350–370 million.

Annapurna’s groundbreaking work began with the development of the AWS Nitro System in 2017, which offloaded networking, storage, and security functions to dedicated hardware, optimizing cloud computing for enterprise workloads.

Over the years, Annapurna expanded its portfolio to include the Graviton family of CPUs, the Inferentia machine-learning accelerator, and now the Trainium chip.

This philosophy ensures tight integration across Amazon’s cloud ecosystem, reducing production cycles and enabling rapid innovation.

Competing with Nvidia and xAI

Amazon’s Ultracluster announcement comes at a time of heightened competition in the AI hardware market. Nvidia, which controls 95% of the GPU sector, remains the dominant player, powering large-scale projects such as Elon Musk’s xAI.

Musk’s Colossus Supercomputer, built using Nvidia Hopper GPUs, recently doubled its capacity to 200,000 units, making it one of the largest AI clusters globally. Colossus powers xAI’s generative AI efforts, including its chatbot Grok, which integrates data from Tesla and X to refine conversational AI models.

While Nvidia GPUs are renowned for their performance, Amazon’s Trainium chips are carving a niche by offering cost-efficient solutions tailored to AI workloads. This differentiation positions AWS as a compelling alternative for startups and enterprises seeking to optimize AI infrastructure investments.
