Can artificial intelligence truly mirror the complexities of human society? In a groundbreaking experiment, AI startup Altera sought to answer this question by embedding nearly 1,000 autonomous agents into Minecraft, the iconic sandbox game.
The results were startling: AI agents formed social roles, debated governance policies, and even spread a parody religion. These behaviors emerged organically, reflecting a striking resemblance to the dynamics of human societies.
“Our goal was to push the boundaries of what autonomous agents could achieve in group settings,” Robert Yang, Altera’s founder, told MIT Technology Review. Using Minecraft as a controlled environment, the company aimed to explore how AI might predict and replicate human interactions. The implications of this research extend far beyond gaming, offering insights into urban planning, policymaking, and human-AI collaboration.

The Birth of Roles: How AI Agents Specialized
The experiment began with small groups of agents tasked with simple objectives—building villages and defending them from external threats. Despite starting with identical traits, the agents soon diversified into specialized roles, such as builders, farmers, and guards. This behavior was neither preprogrammed nor explicitly encouraged, showcasing the emergent properties of the agents’ cognitive systems.
“Agents were capable of organizing themselves into distinct roles, reflecting the diversity and interdependence seen in human societies,” the Project Sid study reports. The driving force behind this behavior was the so called PIANO (Parallel Information Aggregation via Neural Orchestration) architecture, a modular framework designed to process tasks concurrently. PIANO’s social awareness module allowed agents to assess their environment and adapt their behaviors, while its memory module enabled them to retain and act on past interactions.
This architecture ensured that agents’ actions aligned with their roles. Builders focused on crafting tools and fortifying defenses, while farmers cultivated resources. Guards, meanwhile, patrolled village perimeters, defending against potential threats. “Roles were heterogeneous across different agents but were largely persistent across time for each agent,” the study notes, emphasizing the stability and realism of these interactions.

Governance and Democracy: Simulating Collective Decision-Making
As the simulations expanded, Altera introduced systems of governance, testing how AI agents would respond to collective rules. Taxes were implemented, and agents were given the ability to vote on amendments. Certain agents, programmed as influencers, advocated for or against taxation, shaping the outcome of these votes.
“True long-term progression requires agents to autonomously develop their own set of rules and to codify them into laws,” the authors explain. “We establish an existing set of laws and focus on how agents interact with this legal system… including feedback on tax laws, which are collected and converted into amendments by a special Election Manager agent.”
The agents’ behavior mirrored human democratic processes. When taxes were reduced from 20% to 10%, agents adapted, depositing fewer resources into communal chests. This interaction highlighted how individual agency and societal structures interact, offering a framework for testing governance models in controlled environments.

Culture and Belief: The Spread of Ideas Among AI Agents
One of the most striking findings was the emergence of cultural propagation. In a simulation with 500 agents, densely populated towns became centers of cultural activity, generating and sharing memes ranging from eco-conscious themes to pranks. By contrast, rural areas exhibited less cultural exchange, underscoring the role of social density in idea dissemination.
The introduction of a parody religion, Pastafarianism, provided further insight into how beliefs spread. Starting with 20 “priests” programmed to proselytize, the religion expanded rapidly as converts shared its tenets with others. “The number of direct converts (‘Pastafarian / Spaghetti Monster’) and indirect converts (‘Pasta / Spaghetti’) steadily increased across time,” the study observed. By the end of the simulation, Pastafarianism had reached towns across the map, showcasing the organic spread of ideas within AI societies.
These experiments not only highlight the potential for AI to model human-like cultural dynamics but also raise questions about how such systems might influence or replicate ideological dissemination in the real world.

The Technology: Understanding PIANO Architecture
The PIANO architecture was the cornerstone of Altera’s experiments, enabling agents to make coherent decisions and interact dynamically. Its 10 modules worked in tandem, allowing agents to balance immediate reactions with long-term planning.
“Our system consists of 10 distinct modules running concurrently,” the study explained. “Memory stores and retrieves conversations, actions, and observations across various timescales. Social Awareness enables agents to interpret and respond to social cues. Skill Execution performs specific skills or actions within the environment.”
This concurrent processing differentiated PIANO from traditional AI frameworks, which often rely on sequential decision-making. By maintaining coherence across multiple modules, PIANO allowed agents to function as autonomous, adaptable entities in complex environments.

Challenges and Ethical Considerations
Despite its successes, the experiment revealed significant limitations. Agents occasionally exhibited “hallucinations,” producing erroneous outputs that compounded over time and disrupted decision-making. “Even a small rate of hallucinations can poison downstream agent behavior,” the study warned. Additionally, the agents lacked intrinsic motivations, such as survival instincts or curiosity, which are crucial for more realistic simulations.
The findings also raise ethical questions about the use of AI to simulate human behavior. Could such systems be used to manipulate public opinion or model ideological dissemination? These concerns underscore the need for transparency and oversight in the development of AI-driven simulations.
The Road Ahead: Expanding AI Societies
Altera is now exploring how these experiments could translate to real-world applications. The company plans to expand its simulations to platforms like Roblox, integrating human users into AI-driven environments. Yang envisions a future where AI agents assist in urban planning, education, and personalized services, blending seamlessly into human ecosystems.
“We want to create systems that not only collaborate with us but also enrich our lives,” Yang stated. The Minecraft experiments represent a first step toward this vision, offering a glimpse into the possibilities—and challenges—of integrating AI into human society.
