Microsoft Brings Recent Files Widgets to macOS Office Apps

New Office widgets for macOS users allow instant file access to recent Office documents from the desktop.

Microsoft has launched new widgets for macOS users, enabling instant access to recent documents in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint right from the desktop.

Simple Setup for Mac Users

To set up these widgets, users with compatible macOS versions need only right-click on the desktop and select “Edit Widgets.” From there, they can choose the specific app—Word, Excel, or PowerPoint—and decide between four sizes: small, medium, large, or extra-large.

Exclusive to Microsoft 365 Preview Members

The new widgets are currently available for users enrolled in the Microsoft 365 Current Channel (Preview) with Version 16.91 (Build 24110320) or later. For those with iPhones or iPads, similar widgets have been accessible for users on Version 2.85 (Build 24042818) or above. Early adopters can join the Microsoft 365 Insider program for pre-release features, staying ahead of public rollouts.

The widget rollout complements the recent release of Office 2024, a standalone productivity suite catering to those preferring a one-time purchase. Office 2024, designed for both Mac and Windows, updates popular tools like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. It integrates Microsoft’s Fluent Design system, providing a sleek, uniform appearance across apps and enhancing usability.

Available as a one-time purchase, Office 2024 is priced at $149.99 for the Home edition and $249.99 for the Home & Business edition, which includes rights for commercial use. This standalone model appeals to users who prefer ownership over subscription services, maintaining core productivity tools with fewer recurring fees.
