Security solutions and password management provider 1Password has joined the Microsoft Intelligent Security Association (MISA). The partnership aims to deepen its collaboration with Microsoft, and introduces its Extended Access Management platform into Microsoft’s security framework.
This allows businesses using Microsoft security tools to benefit from 1Password’s integrations with Microsoft Sentinel and Entra ID. These additions are expected to enhance cybersecurity measures in complex, distributed work environments, particularly as remote work becomes a mainstay.
Leveraging Sentinel for Real-Time Monitoring
The integration with Microsoft Sentinel, a cloud-native Security information and event management (SIEM) tool, allows data from the 1Password Events API to be imported directly for comprehensive analysis. Sentinel consolidates this data to provide security teams with insights into user sign-ins, shared item usage, and audit events, enabling more precise monitoring and incident response.
Equipped with customizable dashboards and pre-configured analytics rules, this setup allows teams to streamline their threat detection and mitigate risks more efficiently.
Reinforcing Zero Trust with Entra ID Integration
1Password’s work with Microsoft also includes integrating its Device Trust feature into Microsoft Entra ID, which was made generally available in August 2024. Device Trust ensures that only compliant devices—whether corporate-owned or personal—can access sensitive data.
This layer of compliance helps organizations maintain zero-trust policies by evaluating device health before granting access, a feature critical for businesses operating in environments where hybrid and remote work are prevalent. Users are guided through steps to remediate issues if their devices do not meet security standards, easing the administrative load on IT departments.
The journey to this latest milestone began with 1Password’s launch of its Extended Access Management platform in May 2024. The tool was created to fill the Access-Trust Gap, a growing issue as more employees use unsanctioned or personal devices (known as shadow IT) in their daily work.
The initial rollout supported Okta users, with integrations for Microsoft Entra and a beta version for Google Workspace following shortly after due to strong demand. By July 2024, 1Password introduced its Sentinel integration, enabling businesses to bring in data for enhanced monitoring and response, reinforcing security without needing to juggle multiple platforms.
SCIM Bridge and User Management Solutions
To simplify user and group management, 1Password supports Microsoft Entra ID through its SCIM (System for Cross-domain Identity Management) Bridge. The tool automates common administrative tasks like provisioning, updating, and deactivating users, aligning 1Password accounts with company directories.
The SCIM Bridge integration helps IT teams efficiently sync user data and group settings without manual oversight, ensuring that identity management remains seamless.
Application Insights and User Identity
In addition to device compliance features, 1Password has developed Application Insights to help organizations gain visibility into employee application usage. This tool, currently in beta, assists IT administrators in tracking software adoption and controlling shadow IT by guiding employees toward approved applications.
Meanwhile, the User Identity feature extends single sign-on (SSO) to both managed and unmanaged applications, providing businesses with a straightforward way to manage user lifecycles—from onboarding to account deactivation—without relying on other identity solutions.
Background and Market Position
1Password has carved out a strong niche in the cybersecurity space, particularly in identity security and access management. Trusted by companies like Salesforce, Under Armour, and the Associated Press, the company’s success has been underpinned by substantial venture capital backing.
In January 2022, it raised $620 million, setting a valuation record for Canadian tech firms at $6.8 billion. This funding has enabled it to expand its product offerings and reinforce partnerships with major industry players like Microsoft.
The Role of MISA in Cybersecurity Collaboration
The Microsoft Intelligent Security Association (MISA), created to bring together trusted security providers and Microsoft’s own solutions, aims to foster collective advancements in cybersecurity. The addition of 1Password to this association enhances the ecosystem by integrating its Extended Access Management platform into Microsoft’s array of tools, providing businesses with added layers of security that align with zero-trust policies.
