Google’s Big Sleep AI Agent Uncovers Exploitable Bug in SQLite

A critical SQLite bug discovered by Google’s AI sparks debate on AI’s role in cybersecurity, as global AI-driven attacks increase to 600 million per day.

Google´s new Big Sleep AI agent for finding security issues in software, has uncovered a serious vulnerability in SQLite, an open-source database engine widely used in software applications and embedded systems. The discovery adds to the ongoing conversation about AI’s growing role in cybersecurity research.

Google’s achievement demonstrates the potential of AI tools in proactive threat detection. Other AI-based platforms, like Protect AI’s Vulnhuntr, have also already identified zero-day vulnerabilities in real-world codebases using AI, including high-profile Python projects.

How Big Sleep Achieved the Breakthrough

Big Sleep, which emerged from Google’s previous Project Naptime, a collaboration between Project Zero and DeepMind, is an experimental AI agent designed to autonomously identify security flaws. The initiative aims to see if AI models can outperform traditional security measures in detecting complex vulnerabilities.

Unlike standard techniques such as fuzzing—which tests software by introducing random data to trigger crashes—Big Sleep leverages large language models (LLMs) that perform root-cause analysis on software code. Google says these LLMs can “think” like a human researcher, identifying weak points and running simulations to understand how a vulnerability could be exploited.

The flaw found in SQLite involved a stack buffer underflow, a specific type of memory-safety vulnerability. This issue, if left unpatched, could allow attackers to corrupt memory. Although traditional fuzzing tools have limitations in uncovering such complex bugs, Big Sleep successfully diagnosed the problem by simulating how a hacker might exploit it. Google promptly informed SQLite’s developers, who patched the issue before it reached the public. Google says:

“Today, we’re excited to share the first real-world vulnerability discovered by the Big Sleep agent: an exploitable stack buffer underflow in SQLite, a widely used open source database engine. We discovered the vulnerability and reported it to the developers in early October, who fixed it on the same day. Fortunately, we found this issue before it appeared in an official release, so SQLite users were not impacted.”

Clarifying the “First-of-its-Kind” Claim

The discovery comes against a backdrop of rapidly escalating AI-driven cyberattacks. Microsoft reported recently that already over 600 million cyber incidents are occurring daily, driven largely by generative AI. These attacks are becoming more sophisticated and harder to defend against, as AI can automate complex hacking techniques. “Cybercriminals are increasingly automating their operations, giving them a significant advantage over conventional defenses,” Microsoft’s report stated.

Nation-states like Russia, China, and Iran are among the key actors employing AI to conduct cyber espionage and sabotage. In Ukraine, Russian state-backed hackers have deployed AI-enhanced malware for both intelligence gathering and ransomware attacks, blurring the lines between traditional cybercrime and state-sponsored cyber warfare. Meanwhile, North Korea has adopted AI-powered ransomware, such as FakePenny, targeting aerospace firms and focusing on both financial and intelligence objectives.

NTT DATA and Palo Alto Networks Step Up Defenses

In response to these AI-fueled threats, NTT DATA and Palo Alto Networks recently launched its new “Managed Extended Detection and Response (MXDR)”. MXDR, powered by Palo Alto’s Cortex XSIAM platform, integrates AI-driven threat detection across cloud and on-premises environments. The service addresses a pressing need for unified security operations. “Fragmented security tools cannot keep up with today’s automated attacks,” said Sheetal Mehta, NTT DATA’s Global Head of Cybersecurity. By consolidating real-time monitoring and AI-enhanced threat analysis, MXDR aims to defend high-risk sectors like manufacturing and pharmaceuticals.

Google’s Big Sleep project is a significant milestone, but it also highlights the complexities of AI’s role in cybersecurity. While AI-driven tools like Big Sleep can strengthen digital defenses, they also empower attackers with unprecedented capabilities. Microsoft’s alarming statistics illustrate the dual nature of AI advancements. The challenge moving forward is to harness AI’s potential for good while implementing strong oversight to prevent misuse.
