Motorola Pushes AI Features to the Forefront with Moto AI

The upcoming beta rollout for Moto AI will allow a select group of users to try out these features before they are widely available.

Motorola is bringing forward a set of new features designed to change how you interact with your device. These enhancements, introduced at the Lenovo Tech World 2024 event, are aimed at making smartphones smarter by automating daily tasks and improving how users can capture and access information.

The fresh features revolve around the Moto AI platform, which has been slowly evolving since its introduction. Powered by something called Large Action Models (LAM), it uses natural language input to handle common tasks, making everyday use more intuitive for users. The full rollout of these AI tools is expected to arrive in an exclusive beta program later in the year.

New Features for a Smarter, More Efficient Experience

One of the first big additions is a feature dubbed “Catch Me Up.” Forget scrolling through all the notifications you missed. With just a simple voice command, your phone summarizes all the important things in one go. It’s a time-saver that could make it easier to catch up on messages, without having to dig through an overwhelming feed of alerts.

Another trick Motorola’s AI can pull off is “Pay Attention.” You’ve ever been in a meeting or listening to a long talk, only to realize later you didn’t jot down the key parts? “Pay Attention” transcribes those important moments for you, so you don’t have to worry about remembering the details later. It’s basically like having an AI note-taker at your side.

And then there’s “Remember This,” which does more than just take screenshots. With a quick command, it captures whatever’s on your screen, adding AI-generated notes and details for context. Unlike other similar tools, everything stays on your device, stored securely and accessed only when you need it.

How AI is Changing the Way You Use Your Phone

Motorola’s newest AI additions focus on simplifying the experience for users by enabling natural language interactions that feel more like talking to an assistant than using a gadget. This is possible because of the LAM technology, which can learn from your behavior, pick up on routines, and provide a more personalized experience over time.

At Tech World 2024, Motorola demonstrated how this AI works by showing users how to ask their phone to order an iced coffee or get an Uber. The AI takes care of it, no need to pull up apps or manually enter details—just speak and the assistant does the work.

The longer you use it, the better it gets at figuring out what you want. Soon enough, the AI might be setting alarms for you, ordering your daily latte, or even starting your morning playlist without you needing to lift a finger.

Moto AI Grows Beyond the Phone

It’s not just about smartphones. At the same event, Motorola talked about how Moto AI is integrating with its broader Smart Connect platform, which links together different devices. The big promise here is making all your gadgets talk to each other—whether that’s your phone, PC, or IoT devices—so they work together more seamlessly.

One standout feature in this area is “Intelligent Awareness,” which allows users to control these connected devices with simple voice commands. For instance, if you’re working on your PC, you could ask it to sync with your phone to pull up recent photos or files.

Meta’s Quest headsets will also get a slice of this AI pie, enabling users to access messages, apps, and more without needing to take off their headsets. Motorola says it will be available in the Meta Horizon Store soon, opening up new possibilities for cross-device AI interaction.

Moto AI vs. Google Gemini

Motorola´s 2024 Razr smartphones offer a glimpse into the future of AI-powered smartphones by combining two distinct technologies: Motorola’s Moto AI and Google’s Gemini. Each AI platform brings its own set of tools and features, enhancing the user experience in different ways. But how do they stack up against each other?

Gemini, Google’s latest AI assistant, is baked into the Razr series in ways that go beyond just voice commands. Users can access Gemini directly from the external display, making it always at your fingertips, whether you’re planning a trip or getting step-by-step guidance on a project. Gemini stands out in how it integrates with Google’s ecosystem—apps like Maps, Gmail, YouTube, and Drive sync seamlessly with it, offering a smooth, unified experience across devices.

For anyone looking to boost productivity, Gemini is packed with features like email drafting assistance and even advanced planning tools. And for new Razr users, there’s a sweet deal: three months of Gemini Advanced for free, providing access to Google’s top-tier AI models without extra cost.

On the other hand, Moto AI, designed in collaboration with Google Cloud, takes a more creative angle. With features like Moto Magic Canvas, you can generate images simply by describing them in text. It’s an AI-driven creative tool that goes beyond typical AI assistants. Style Sync adds another layer of personalization, letting users create wallpapers based on photos of their surroundings. For photo editing, Moto AI offers practical tools like Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, and Photo Unblur, which come built into the phone.

CThe differences between these two AI platforms lie mainly in how they interact with the user. Google Gemini is more integrated, available from the external screen and connected to a wide range of apps, making it an all-in-one assistant for almost every task. It excels at general assistance, especially when working across the Google ecosystem. In contrast, Moto AI is more about customization and creative control, focusing on personalizing the device and generating visuals based on user input.

What’s Next for Moto AI?

Motorola plans to expand its AI features over time, inviting more users to test these tools in a beta phase. The ultimate goal is to take the complexity out of smartphone use, making it a more natural, efficient experience that anticipates what you need before you ask for it. The company says feedback from early testers will shape future updates, ensuring the tech remains in tune with users’ expectations.
