Upgraded iPad Mini Offers A17 Pro Chip and Advanced AI Features

The updated iPad Mini starts at $499 for the Wi-Fi-only model, which comes with 128GB of storage—double that of its predecessor.

Apple today launched a newly updated version of the iPad Mini, featuring the powerful A17 Pro chip and added support for their new Apple Intelligence platform. The 8.3-inch tablet, already known for its small size, now promises enhanced performance and new creative features, making it a stronger option for both casual users and professionals.

With the A17 Pro processor, users can expect a 30% boost in CPU speeds and 25% better graphics performance over its predecessor. The upgraded chip enables smoother multitasking, faster photo editing, and a more responsive experience overall.

A17 Pro Brings Major Power Boost

The introduction of Apple’s A17 Pro chip into the iPad Mini is a notable change, particularly in terms of speed. This chip, with six cores in total—two performance-focused, four efficiency—gives the iPad Mini a hefty upgrade. The GPU has also been enhanced, offering 25% better performance than the previous model, which is a welcome addition for gaming and design tasks.

Compared to the last version with the A15 Bionic chip, this model is clearly aimed at handling more demanding tasks. The A17 Pro processor lets the iPad Mini tackle intensive apps like Affinity Designer and even augmented reality (AR) apps with ease, providing users with a smoother, more fluid experience when switching between applications or diving into detailed work.

Apple Intelligence and Enhanced Features

The new iPAd Mini comes with Apple Intelligence, a suite of AI-powered tools designed to enhance daily tasks and creative workflows. Integrated into iPadOS 18, these AI capabilities use a blend of on-device and cloud-based models to improve performance and maintain privacy. New features like advanced note-taking tools, smarter Siri interactions, and automatic photo editing can now be found in the iPad Mini.

Apple Intelligence leverages the A17 Pro chip to run faster AI computations right on the device. The software introduces features like Memories in Photos, where users can now create custom videos by typing out a description. The AI also assists with other creative tools like Image Playground, allowing users to generate images quickly based on a brief description or concept.

Apple Pencil Pro Integration for Artists

One of the biggest upgrades comes in the form of Apple Pencil Pro support. Apple’s new stylus adds pressure sensitivity, gesture controls, and even haptic feedback, giving users more control over their sketches and notes. The tool is designed to be more responsive, with the ability to detect squeezes and rotations, making it a versatile addition for artists and note-takers alike.

Apple Pencil Pro also brings hover functionality, where users can preview marks on the screen before applying them. Combined with the ability to switch tools quickly using gestures, this makes the iPad Mini a highly portable yet powerful option for creatives who need flexibility in their tools.

Camera and Connectivity Updates

The iPad Mini’s 12MP rear camera has also received an upgrade, now featuring Smart HDR 4 for enhanced dynamic range in photos. The improved camera is ideal for users who rely on the iPad Mini for mobile work, allowing them to capture and edit high-quality images on the go. Machine learning is used to scan documents automatically via the Camera app, making it easy to digitize important paperwork directly from the tablet.

Connectivity has also been improved with Wi-Fi 6E, which offers faster speeds than the previous generation. For those who need cellular connectivity, the 5G-enabled models support eSIM for easier plan management and quicker network access. In terms of ports, the iPad Mini now features USB-C with up to 10Gbps transfer speeds, making it faster to transfer large files, such as videos and photos.

Environmental Considerations

Apple has made strides to ensure the new iPad Mini meets its sustainability goals. The device uses 100% recycled aluminum in its enclosure, along with other recycled materials in key components. Its packaging is also fully fiber-based, part of Apple’s broader goal to eliminate plastic packaging by 2025.

The new iPad Mini is part of Apple’s ongoing efforts to become carbon neutral across its entire product lineup by 2030, continuing the company’s push for more eco-friendly production practices.

Pricing and Availability

The iPad Mini starts at $499 for the Wi-Fi model, which comes with 128GB of storage. For those who need both Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity, the price starts at $649. Pre-orders are available starting today, with the official launch set for October 23. The iPad Mini comes in four finishes, including two new colors: blue and purple.

Apple is also offering a new Smart Folio accessory in charcoal gray, light violet, denim, and sage for $59. This adds further customization options for users who want to pair the iPad Mini with protective gear that matches their style.
