Spotify is adding music videos for premium users across 85 new markets. These additional regions now have access to a feature that was initially launched in a small number of countries, marking the platform’s attempt to mix music with visual content. This music video integration is limited to paying users, leaving free-tier listeners with audio-only options for now.
The music video feature first appeared earlier this year, but only in a handful of places like the U.K., Germany, Brazil, and a few others. Now, Spotify has taken a big leap forward by adding many more regions. As of now, there’s no confirmation whether the U.S. is included in this latest rollout, although it’s a major market for the company.
Music Videos Now in 97 Countries
Spotify’s latest addition brings its music video beta to 97 countries, though only premium subscribers get access to this feature. Initially, only 11 countries could test the new video service, including places like Italy, Poland, and Sweden. As time passed, Egypt became part of this experiment, and now, 85 more markets are joining.
While YouTube has long held its place as a go-to platform for music videos, Spotify is making efforts to bring these fans to its service. With this move, Spotify is more directly competing with YouTube by allowing users to switch between audio and video seamlessly.
Improved Video Experience on Mobile and Desktop
For those who enjoy watching music videos, Spotify has made the experience better over time. Before, switching from music to video would restart the clip from the beginning, but now users can switch back and forth without losing their place. Users can also spot videos more easily with the new video icon next to song titles.
By rotating their phone to landscape mode, users can also watch videos in full screen. Those who do so are 34% more likely to play the song again the next week, according to Spotify’s internal data. This feature aims to keep users on the app longer, offering a more integrated music experience.
Discovering Music with Videos
Spotify’s move into music videos isn’t just about adding more features. It’s designed to help users discover music in new ways. The company reports that users are more likely to save or share songs after watching the corresponding music videos. This feature is designed to create deeper connections between fans and artists, bringing a new dimension to the way people engage with music.
The platform has also made it easier to find music videos in search. Users can now type the name of a song or artist to see if there’s a video available. It’s another step in Spotify’s efforts to make videos a bigger part of its service.
Building on Audio with Visuals
Although the catalog of music videos on Spotify remains relatively small, the company plans to keep expanding it over time. Artists like Charli XCX and LISA are already featured in the collection, and more artists are likely to join soon. Premium users who have access to this feature can expect it to grow as Spotify pushes forward with its visual content strategy.
With new additions like Countdown Pages and Canvas, Spotify is gradually becoming more than just a music streaming app. It’s trying to create an environment where fans can connect with their favorite artists through multiple mediums, from music to video to live events and even merchandise. As Spotify keeps adding video content, it’s clear that the platform is aiming to retain users longer and provide them with more ways to interact with the artists they follow.
