WhatsApp users on Apple devices now have more control over videos in chats, with a recent update bringing fresh options. In version 24.20.78 for iOS, video playback has been made more flexible, allowing people to adjust playback speed. Additionally, a picture-in-picture (PiP) mode is now available, enabling multitasking while watching videos. These features are slowly rolling out, with some users receiving the update ahead of others.
Speed Controls for Watching Videos
The new update lets users speed up their video content. Previously, videos on WhatsApp could only be played at the original speed, but now, users can choose between 1.5x and 2.0x speeds. For those trying to get through long videos more quickly, this is a practical addition. The option is found next to the video progress bar, making it easy to change how fast or slow a video plays while watching it.
Whether you’re catching up on long messages or tutorials, the playback speed feature ensures you don’t have to sit through everything at regular pace. Instead of waiting for a full-length video to play, you can now zoom through it. However, WhatsApp hasn’t confirmed whether the feature will arrive on Android devices anytime soon.
Picture-in-Picture for Easier Multitasking
Another feature included in this update is picture-in-picture, letting users shrink the video into a movable window. This means they can continue messaging, browsing other conversations, or using different apps, all while watching a video. PiP mode is activated via a button located next to the playback bar, and users can resize or move the video around the screen as needed.
Picture-in-picture adds a layer of convenience for those who want to keep doing other things while still having their video in view. This feature is currently supported on devices running iOS 14 or later, so older iPhones may not have access to it.
Gradual Rollout
Although these features are available now, not everyone will get them at the same time. WhatsApp often rolls out updates in stages, so some users may need to wait a bit longer to see the new tools on their devices. If you haven’t received the update, it’s recommended to regularly check the App Store for the latest version of WhatsApp. The company suggests updating frequently to stay up to date with new features and improvements.
For iOS users who frequently share or receive videos in their chats, this update marks a notable improvement in the way they can interact with multimedia. Both features are expected to improve the overall experience, especially for those who are always juggling multiple tasks on their phone.
