Apple M4 MacBook Pro Leak Hints at Performance Boosts and New Ports

The leak shows more ports, 16GB base RAM, and an M4 chip with improved performance coming with Apple's next MacBook Pro.

A newly surfaced video from Russian YouTuber Wylsacom offers what may be the first look at the unannounced M4 MacBook Pro. The detailed unboxing showcases several changes, suggesting Apple’s next 14-inch model could bring more power and improved connectivity options. While Apple has yet to officially introduce the device, the video provides insights into the design and specs, offering a sneak peek ahead of the anticipated announcement.

Mark Gurman, claims on X that the video looks legitimate. Certainly, the video’s content closely mirrors earlier rumors and leaks, particularly a previous packaging leak that appeared on social media. According to sources, this unreleased MacBook Pro may have been sold through a private group.

Port Selection and Hardware Upgrades

One notable feature shown in the unboxing is an additional Thunderbolt 4 port. The current base MacBook Pro only offers two, but the leaked unit features three. Along with the Thunderbolt ports, the MacBook retains other familiar features, including an HDMI port, an SD card reader, and MagSafe charging.

The packaging in the video also indicates that the base model comes with 16GB of RAM. If accurate, this marks a shift for Apple, as previous base models started with just 8GB. This move could cater to users demanding more multitasking capability right out of the box, without needing to upgrade configurations.

M4 Chip Performance Shown in Benchmark Test

Perhaps the most anticipated detail is the first apparent benchmark test for the new M4 chip. In the video, Wylsacom runs a Geekbench test, producing a single-core score of 3,864 and a multi-core score of 15,288. There is a clear performance increase compared to the M3 MacBook Pro, which typically benchmarks around 3,000 for single-core and 11,800 for multi-core.

The boost in speed can be attributed to the M4’s 10-core CPU, an upgrade from the M3’s 8-core processor. Apple appears to be continuing its focus on improving processing power with each generation, and the early benchmarks for the M4 suggest it will perform better, especially in tasks like video editing and 3D rendering.

Space Black Design Variant and Speculation

Another change hinted at in the leak is the introduction of a Space Black color option for the base model. Previously, this color was reserved for higher-end configurations featuring the M3 Pro or M3 Max chips. Extending the color to the entry-level model could appeal to users who want a sleeker aesthetic without needing to choose the more powerful models.

While the authenticity of the leak remains unconfirmed, the details line up with previous speculation about Apple’s next release. Industry insiders expect Apple to formally introduce its latest Macs later this month, likely setting a release date for early November.

The M4 chip was first introduced earlier this year in the iPad Pro lineup, and it’s no surprise that Apple is bringing the same architecture to its MacBook Pro range. It aligns with Apple’s broader strategy of unifying its chipsets across devices, ensuring consistent performance and compatibility across its ecosystem.
