Apple's ongoing updates to its hardware range continue, as the company is expected to launch new devices before the year ends. Alongside a much-anticipated refresh of its Mac lineup, the next generation of the iPad mini is likely to make its debut soon, along with the iPhone SE and iPad Air, which are also scheduled for release in the near future.
The compact iPad mini, which was last updated in 2021, is set to see an upgrade. Though details remain limited, Bloomberg reports that the new model, identified internally as “J410,” will likely include a faster chip, potentially moving on from the A15 Bionic. This update will focus on boosting performance rather than design changes, making it a strong option for users who value portability.
MacBook Pro: M4 Chips Boost Performance
As for the Mac lineup, new MacBook Pro models featuring the upcoming M4 chips are expected to arrive shortly. These updates, which will include options for M4 Pro and M4 Max versions, promise faster performance across the board. Apple seems to be sticking with the current design for the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, holding off on major visual changes like thinner models or OLED screens until later years.
For those who rely on power-heavy tasks, the move to the M4 chip will be a welcome enhancement, improving on last year's M3-powered versions. With the first M4 chip already available in the iPad Pro, benchmarks indicate around a 25% jump in multi-core CPU performance, which should translate into smoother performance for demanding applications.
iPad Air Keeps Things Subtle
Meanwhile, the iPad Air is due for a refresh, though it's not expected to see any major redesigns. According to reports, Apple is developing two versions of the device, an 11-inch and a 13-inch model, both set to run on the newer M3 chip. While the external design will likely remain unchanged, users can expect internal updates that bring better performance.
In addition to the updated internals, Apple is rumored to be working on a new Magic Keyboard for the iPad Air, borrowing some features from the iPad Pro's accessory. This could mean added function keys and a more premium finish, making the tablet more versatile for professional use.
I previously reported that Samsung has a contract with Apple to supple OLED displays for an upcoming iPad Air model. However, that is unlikely to be any version launched in the near future. The shift to OLED panels in the iPad Air might occur earlier than anticipated, possibly by 2026. Analysts view this as part of Apple's broader goal to enhance display quality across its products.
iPhone SE Adopts Modern Look
Apple is also preparing to roll out a refreshed iPhone SE early next year, offering a mid-range alternative with a familiar design. This fourth-generation model, codenamed “V59,” will adopt the look of the iPhone 14, featuring Face ID, a 60Hz OLED display, and a notch.
Under the hood, the iPhone SE will include a more advanced processor, giving it a modern edge compared to older models while maintaining its appeal as a more affordable option in Apple's lineup.
Updates to Apple's desktop offerings are also on the horizon, with both the iMac and Mac mini expected to receive the M4 chip. The iMac is unlikely to see a design update but will feature faster processing power thanks to the new chip.
The Mac mini, however, is set to undergo a significant redesign for the first time in over a decade. Reports suggest that the new model will be roughly the size of an Apple TV, ditching its USB-A ports in favor of five USB-C connections, two of which will be located on the front for easier access. This updated Mac mini will come in both M4 and M4 Pro versions, catering to a wide range of users from casual home setups to more demanding professional environments.
