Google is rolling out a new AI-driven feature for Gmail, available on both and iOS, that promises to make replying to emails faster and more personalized. The update, exclusive to users on premium plans like Google One AI Premium and various Gemini tiers, enhances the existing Smart Reply function by adding more tailored responses that adapt to the specific context of email conversations.

Initially announced during Google I/O 2024, this update leverages Gemini AI to generate replies that reflect the tone and content of the entire conversation thread, rather than offering simple, templated responses.

How Contextual Smart Replies Work

What sets this update apart from the original Smart Reply feature is its ability to take into account the whole email thread when generating suggested responses. Instead of offering basic replies, users now get three more personalized options, displayed in a carousel. Google explains in a blog post that the suggestions vary in tone and content, giving users the flexibility to choose the one that best fits the conversation.

For an added layer of convenience, users can press and hold any suggestion to see a full preview of the reply before inserting it into their email. Once selected, the response comes complete with an opening and a closing line, which users can then edit or send as is.

Limited Access for Premium Subscribers

At launch, the feature is available exclusively to subscribers of specific Google services, including Google One AI Premium and various Gemini plans for Business and Education. While this limits access to a certain subset of Gmail users, it underscores Google's strategy of offering advanced AI tools to paying customers.

For now, the feature is limited to English, with no word on when or if additional languages will be supported. Still, the inclusion of these AI-driven tools signals a broader push by Google to enhance productivity for its paid subscribers.

Streamlining Email Management with AI

With the introduction of Contextual Smart Replies, Google is looking to make email management faster and more efficient, especially for users who deal with a large volume of emails daily. By analyzing the content of email threads, the system generates responses that are more suited to the conversation's tone and purpose, reducing the need for manual input and speeding up the process of replying.

This update builds on other AI features in Gmail, like the “Summarize” tool, which has recently been expanded to cover individual emails instead of just threads, and Gmail Q&A, a desktop tool designed to assist users with specific email-related tasks. Google continues to integrate AI into its productivity tools, giving users more ways to handle everyday tasks with less effort.
