Meta AI, the artificial intelligence chatbot developed by Meta, has surpassed 400 million monthly active users, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The significant milestone underscores the accelerated uptake of the chatbot across Meta's ecosystem, including WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
Weekly Engagement and Market Competition
The AI chatbot sees interaction from approximately 185 million users each week. Despite intense competition from rivals like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Microsoft's Copilot, Meta AI is steadily increasing its user engagement levels.
While commenting on Threads, Zuckerberg pointed out that Meta AI's growth is noteworthy as it is yet to roll out in several large markets, including the UK, Brazil, and the EU. Meta CFO Susan Li has previously noted India as Meta AI's largest market, with over a billion users across Meta's applications.

In July, Meta said it was postponing launching its AI in Europe because of regulatory demands. OpenAI faced similar roadblocks after it released ChatGPT in the EU. Meta's primary issue revolves around adhering to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) when using data from European individuals for model training.
Earlier this year, Meta announced plans to utilize publicly accessible posts from Facebook and Instagram for this purpose, notifying over 2 billion EU users about their opt-out options. A similar decision has also been taken in Brazil, where Meta has paused its AI services.
Integration Across Platforms
Meta AI is deeply integrated into various Meta platforms, collectively reaching around 3 billion daily users. Beyond these platforms, the chatbot is available on a standalone website and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, with upcoming plans for inclusion in Meta Quest mixed-reality headsets.
Since its debut in September 2023, Meta AI has expanded into more than 22 countries, including the US, Australia, and India. Recently, the AI service extended its language support to seven additional languages, such as Hindi and Hinglish, increasing its accessibility.
Zuckerberg also recognized the expanding adoption of Meta's open-source Llama models, which have been downloaded almost 350 million times, including 20 million downloads just last month. Usage of these models among major cloud service providers has more than doubled from May to July 2024.
Powered by Llama 3.1, Meta AI is integrated into Meta's prominent platforms at no cost, offering features like text composition, image generation, and online search capabilities. Nonetheless, Meta does not actively disclose detailed user statistics despite the broad availability of the chatbot.
