A new Windows 11 update from Microsoft allows users to remove the Recall feature, providing more flexibility and control. The update, part of the Windows 11 version 24H2 roll-out, is specifically for Copilot+ PCs equipped with Snapdragon X Elite or Plus processors.
Recall, a feature incorporated into Windows 11, leverages Copilot to generate a searchable timeline of screenshots. Accessing the timeline enables users to revisit their digital activities on specific dates, providing a comprehensive overview of past interactions. While initially scheduled for a June release, the feature's absence of encryption necessitated a delay, underscoring the paramount importance of delivering a secure user experience.
Privacy Concerns and User Feedback
Upon its initial release, Recall on Copilot+ PCs triggered privacy concerns among users, leading to worries about data security. Due to these apprehensions, Microsoft temporarily suspended the feature. In reaction to the feedback, Microsoft reinstated Recall as an optional component, making it removable via the “optionalfeatures” command in the Run dialog. Previously, options were limited to blocking or disabling the feature via settings.
To enhance privacy and security, Microsoft has significantly revamped Recall. The feature now requires explicit user consent and includes enhanced security protocols to ensure data accessibility only to authorized users. Additionally, the onboarding process has been updated to provide clearer explanations. Recall has been added to the Windows Features list, accessible through the old Control Panel under Programs and Features.
Public Testing and Broader Availability
Public testing for Recall will commence in October. While initially available only on Copilot+ PCs, efforts are already underway to extend the feature to unsupported devices. Independent developers have even introduced open-source variations to ensure Recall's functionality on all computers. However, this feature is notably absent from the Windows 11 Canary build, and further testing is anticipated.
In response to feedback and regulatory scrutiny, particularly from the EU, Microsoft has made Recall an optional feature, offering users greater system control. Update KB5041865 now allows for the uninstallation of Recall, aiming to restore user trust and safeguard the computing environment.
