Google Introduces Gemini AI Q&A to Android Gmail

Google's new Gmail Q&A feature for Android allows users to ask questions about their emails and receive automated responses from Gemini.

-

has introduced a generative AI feature called Q&A for users. The tool allows users to ask questions about their emails and get automated responses, aiming to simplify email management.

AI Email Management

The Q&A feature is similar to the Gemini side panel currently available in the web version of Gmail. Users can direct the AI to search their inbox for specific content, display unread emails, identify messages from particular senders, or summarize emails on given topics.

In a blog post, Google explains that Android users can access this feature by tapping the black Gemini star icon at the top of the app or using the “summarize this email” chip. Future updates are expected to expand this functionality to include information from Google Drive files.

Who Can Access It

Initially, the feature is available to Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, or Education Premium account users, and those with a paid Google One AI Premium subscription. The feature's rollout for Android should be complete by mid-September, with plans to bring it to the iOS Gmail app as well. In addition, users with access to the Gemini Advanced AI model can now create custom chatbots through a feature named Custom Gems, also accessible to Google One AI Premium subscribers.

To utilize Gmail Q&A on Android, administrators need to enable smart features and personalization. The rollout for Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains will be gradual, taking up to 15 days from August 29, 2024, for the feature to appear. Those looking for more information on using Gemini in Gmail can refer to the Help Center.

The feature builds on previous integrations of Gemini AI into other Google Workspace apps, such as Docs, Drive, and Slides, where it's available via a side panel for desktop users. The introduction of Gmail Q&A seeks to improve user experience and efficiency in the Gmail app on Android devices.
