Google is enhancing its Gemini Advanced AI service by integrating a customizable chatbot feature, an addition now part of the Google One AI Premium subscription priced at $19.99 per month, with a free trial available for the first month.
Introducing Custom Gems: Personalized AI Assistants
This new feature, known as Custom Gems, allows users to create tailored AI chatbots. Users can provide specific directives and personalize the bots with unique names. The bots are designed to assist in various tasks, including brainstorming, managing projects, and creating social media content. The AI’s capability to remember and apply detailed instructions proves especially useful for repetitive or complex activities.
In a blog post, Google says it provides pre-made examples for easier bot creation. These include a Writing Editor for article feedback, a Learning Coach to simplify difficult subjects, and a Coding Partner for software development support.
Part of Google One AI Premium Subscription
Custom Gems, now part of Gemini Advanced, can be used on both desktop and mobile devices. This feature is bundled within the Google One AI Premium package. Additionally, Google has this month introduced Imagen 3, the latest AI image generator, which is now available to Gemini app users. Imagen 3 is capable of creating high-quality images from text descriptions in various styles, such as photorealistic landscapes or whimsical claymation scenes.
Imagen 3, featured on Pixel Studio, is Google’s latest model for image generation and is now accessible to Gemini users in all languages. Example outputs include photorealistic mountain vistas, creative images such as a ball gown made of paper napkins, and animated tiny dragons. While free users can access some capabilities of Imagen 3, generating images of people is initially limited to those with Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise subscriptions, starting with English.
Custom AI Bots Across the Industry
Google joins other Big Tech and leading AI developers in allowing users to create custom AI bots. In July, Meta brought a similar ability to Instagram through its AI Studio. AI Studio gives creators the ability to develop chatbots that respond to followers’ messages. These AI chatbots use data from past interactions, captions, and video transcripts to generate personalized replies.
OpenAI offers the ability for users to build custom “GPTs”, which were available through the GPT Store. However, the store was not gaining traction and has since been closed. Microsoft has also brought custom AI chatbots to users through its Copilot GPT Builder.
