Google has implemented a fresh AI note-taking function in Google Meet to simplify capturing meeting discussions. Initially, this feature is available to certain Google Workspace users.
Real-Time Summary Generation
Named “take notes for me,” the feature processes and summarizes key points during meetings in real-time. The generated summaries are automatically linked to the relevant calendar events and saved in the organizer's Google Drive, complying with organizational data retention rules.
Currently, this AI note-taking functionality is available only for English speech. In a blog post, Google says that notes are accessible to the meeting organizer and participants who have activated the feature. Originally announced in April as a part of the AI Meetings and Messaging add-on, this feature is priced at $10 per user monthly and includes an auto-translation tool.
Complementary Meeting Tools
This new tool not only captures discussions but also helps latecomers catch up by summarizing missed information, eliminating the need for repetition. When combined with Google Meet's existing recording and transcription functionalities, the summary document also includes links to these files, consolidating all meeting records in one place.
However, concerns about the accuracy of these AI-generated notes persist. Users have pointed out that the transcription tool often needs manual correction, raising questions about the new note-taking tool's reliability. The full rollout is targeted for completion by September 10, 2024, though verifying the notes for precision is recommended.
The “take notes for me” option is part of the Duet AI suite in Google Meet, which also includes features like face detection, automatic caption translation, noise cancellation, and video enhancement. While the feature is enabled by default, administrators can manage its availability through the admin console.
