Freepik has teamed up with Magnific AI to introduce Mystic, a sophisticated AI-driven image generator. Unlike leaders in the field like Midjourney and OpenAI's Dall-E, Mystic leverages a streamlined workflow that combines the Flux foundation model with precise tuning and advanced parameters for image creation. This combination is crafted to yield high-definition visuals directly in full HD.
Workflow and Unique Features
Mystic is built to produce diverse, photorealistic images across multiple categories such as portraits, animals, landscapes, fantasy, interior designs, architectural concepts, pixel art, game elements, and memes. It was announced by Freepik in a Twitter post. The generated images boast a resolution of 1,664 x 2,432 pixels, which ensures superior accuracy to the given prompts. An assortment of top photographers, digital artists, VFX experts, and designers have curated these images, with further refinement by Freepik's and Magnific AI's in-house teams.

Positioning Against Competitors
While platforms like Midjourney and Dall-E have established themselves as market leaders, Mystic's approach with its high-resolution output aims to compete effectively. Midjourney recently introduced a web UI, simplifying access by bypassing the need for Discord and adding features like reframing, repainting, varying region, pan, and zoom. This user-friendly update enhances the experience, but Mystic's focus on high-res output might appeal to users in search of superior detail and fidelity.
Mystic is accessible via Freepik's Premium subscription and will soon be integrated into Magnific AI's offerings. The creators highlight Mystic's capacity to generate images that closely match user prompts, distinguishing it from other AI generators. The launch of Mystic represents a significant development in AI creativity tools, and its impact on the market dynamics will be noteworthy.
Magnific is already challenging Midjourney directly. The company's blog has posts that compare images from Midjourney and Magnific AI. This week, Midjourney expanded its AI image generator to all users for free, giving 25 images without the need for Discord.
Growing Market for AI Image Generators
- OpenAI has also introduced ShapE, a generative model that can create 3D models from text, opening up new possibilities for AI in image creation. The company also operates the DALL-E 3 image generating art model.
- Stability AI, a startup that focuses on generative AI, has released StableStudio, an open-source web app that uses its Stable Diffusion model to generate images from text prompts. Users can also use DreamStudio features to make multiple variations of an image with different styles and attributes. Stability has since launched Stable Fast 3D for rapid image generation.
- Meta is already in this field and has unveiled I-JEPA, its own AI image generator based on its generative transformer model. I-JEPA can learn the associations between words and images, and generate realistic images from text descriptions.
- Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce giant, has launched Tongyi Wanxiang, a generative AI image generator that can handle both Chinese and English languages. Users can customize the image output parameters using Composer, a large model developed by Alibaba Cloud.
- Chip giant Nvidia debuted its Perfusion AI art creation tool in August 2023.
- Elon Musk's xAI launched image generation capabilities as part of its Gork multimodal AI model. Grok is baked into Musk's X/Twitter social media platform.
- Black Forest Labs has also been aiming for Midjourney, claiming its Flux AI is better at creating images featuring human characters.
- Midjourney released free access to its AI image generation model, providing 25 free images per day.
- Freepik and Magnific AI partnered to create the Mystic AI image model, which is built to produce diverse, photorealistic images across multiple categories such as portraits, animals, landscapes, fantasy, interior designs, architectural concepts, pixel art, game elements, and memes.
