Global media company Condé Nast has entered a long-term agreement with OpenAI, enabling the tech company to access content from Condé Nast's prominent titles, including The New Yorker, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Bon Appétit, and WIRED. The partnership allows to embed these publications' material into its ChatGPT and the experimental SearchGPT.

Adapting to Technological Changes

CEO Roger Lynch of Condé Nast emphasized the importance of adapting to new technological opportunities while securing proper attribution and compensation for content. Lynch, addressing internal stakeholders via email, discussed the financial hurdles currently faced by the publishing industry, exacerbated by alterations in classic search functionalities.

He noted that the deal with OpenAI aims to recuperate some lost revenue, facilitating ongoing investments in and creative projects. Lynch commended OpenAI for their openness and collaborative attitude towards ensuring the integrity of information on their platforms.

AI and Media Industry Collaborations

OpenAI, through a blog post, highlighted that Condé Nast joins a lineup of media entities collaborating with firms. Noteworthy collaborations include companies like The Atlantic, Axel Springer,  News Corp, the Financial Times and TIME. Other platforms such as Reddit and Automattic, the owner of WordPress and Tumblr, have also aligned with AI firms.

Traditionally, AI companies have utilized internet-sourced data for training without properly from content creators, leading to conflicts with news organizations, including The New York Times. The move towards formal partnerships reflects a shift towards mutual cooperation. OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap expressed the company's dedication to working with publishers to ensure their maintain accuracy and high-quality content delivery.
