Microsoft has released Windows 11 Insider build 26120.1542 (KB5041872) for the Dev Channel, featuring a shift in the Widgets entry-point on left-aligned taskbars. It now appears on the left side of the system tray, enhancing available space for richer taskbar content. The Widgets board will now open from the right side instead of the left.
The update also enhances how users navigate the taskbar. With keyboard focus on the taskbar (WIN + T), pressing the first letter of an app’s name focuses on that app. If there are multiple apps starting with the same letter, repeated presses cycle through them. Home and End keys now move the focus to the first and last items on the taskbar, respectively.
Bug Fixes and Known Problems
Several bugs have been fixed in this build. Issues with text suggestions for the hardware keyboard and unexpected closed emoji panels have been resolved. A bug in the Registry Editor that saved incorrect HEX values when pasting into DWORD or QWORD text boxes has been addressed.
Additional fixed issues include:
- Errors preventing adding new languages or optional features (error 0x800f081f).
- Improvements to the Windows Kernel Vulnerable Driver Blocklist for better security against BYOVD attacks.
- DNS server enhancements to tackle CVE-2024-37968, addressing potential SERVFAIL errors or timeouts in outdated domain configurations.
However, some issues remain, such as potential crashes in Task Manager when navigating between pages. Moreover, new Insiders will notice “(repair version)” next to the latest Dev Channel build, indicating an upgrade to the latest version.
Incremental Updates
Microsoft’s new build introduces changes gradually rolling out across the Dev Channel, toggled on via Settings > Windows Update. Insiders will receive features based on Windows 11, version 24H2, delivered through an enablement package (Build 26120.xxxx).
The update resolves an issue within Group Policy Preferences Item Level Targeting (ILT) and Local Users and Groups, specifically choosing a group from the target domain that affects ESAE, HF, or PAM deployments. The NetJoinLegacyAccountReuse registry key has also been removed as noted in KB5020276.
Additionally, issues persist whereby PowerShell and VBScript prevent using Windows Update Agent (WUA) APIs in scripts, and firmware updates might fail when BitLocker is enabled. Features in these builds are subject to change as they undergo various trials and feedback.
