Windows 11 Canary Build Brings Battery Life Improvements

has introduced Build 27686 to Windows 11, targeting improvements in battery life. This latest build, available in the Canary Channel, incorporates several energy-saving enhancements. Particularly beneficial for users with Snapdragon X-powered devices, these devices are already noted for their extended battery duration. Microsoft is encouraging users to provide feedback through the Feedback Hub to gauge the effectiveness of these changes.

Versatile Power Modes

A notable addition in this build is the capacity to select different power modes based on whether the device is charging or on battery. The feature allows laptops to operate in “Best Performance” mode when plugged in and switch to “Best power efficiency” mode when on battery. In the Settings > System > Power & battery section, there are various user interface updates to support this feature.

The build adds an option for HDR video streaming on HDR displays, even when HDR is deactivated. This can be configured under Settings > System > Display > HDR. Furthermore, the FAT32 file system limit has been increased to 2TB, giving users better flexibility for larger file management.

Refinements in Windows Sandbox

Enhancements to Windows Sandbox include folder sharing with the host system, runtime clipboard redirection, and audio/video input support. These features can be accessed via the new “…” icon at the top right of the app. Additionally, the sandbox client preview now receives updates through the Microsoft Store, keeping users up-to-date with the latest features and improvements.

The build also addresses several problems, such as fixes for Dev Drive VHDs, synchronization of the battery icon on the lock screen, and various bugs in Windows Security and the . However, some issues persist, including glitches with the emoji panel and the Defrag and Optimize drives tool. Microsoft is actively seeking solutions for these ongoing problems.

Build 27686 also introduces a button for detaching virtual hard disks (VHD/VHDx) in the Settings app and incorporates background network tests to gather diagnostic data aimed at future network performance enhancements. These updates reflect Microsoft's continuous effort to refine the experience.
