Google has announced that its forthcoming Pixel 9 phones will feature the Gemini AI chatbot, as the standard assistant, superseding the Google Assistant. The move indicates Google's shift towards enhancing user interaction through advanced AI.
Introduction of Advanced AI
Gemini is powered by Google's sophisticated language models, aiming for a superior user experience. Besides retaining Google Assistant's functionalities, Gemini will offer new features like image and text generation, leading to a richer interaction. Google also announced a new Gemini Live feature, which brings an AI voice assistant to Gemini.
Sissie Hsiao, vice president and general manager of Gemini Experiences at Google, mentioned that Gemini is an upgrade from the Google Assistant. Users can still switch back to the classic Google Assistant if desired. Gemini ensures compatibility with previous Google Assistant features, encompassing basic tasks such as controlling smart devices and more nuanced interactions, such as weather comparisons across different regions.
Generative AI Features
Gemini's standout attribute is its generative capability, including image creation and text generation, adding a novel element to the user experience. While available on select Android devices as an opt-in service, Gemini will be the default assistant on Pixel 9, advancing the AI functionalities for users.
While Gemini will be the default on the Pixel 9 series, Google is giving users the choice to revert to the classic Google Assistant, allowing for a tailored interaction based on personal preferences.
Positive Feedback and Future Implications
According to Sameer Samat, president of the Android ecosystem, user feedback on Gemini has been very favorable. Though there's no definitive announcement about whether Gemini will permanently replace Google Assistant, its ongoing development suggests it might become the main AI assistant in the future.
