Samsung Secures OLED Supply Deal for 2026 iPad Air

Apple is choosing Samsung Display for iPad Air OLED panels in 2026 due to higher production capacity and superior panel technology.

-

Industry insiders report that Apple has decided to purchase OLED panels for its 2026 iPad Air from Samsung Display. The Elec reports that the choice is largely influenced by Samsung’s higher production capability, which outstrips that of LG Display, another competitor for the supply deal.

Production Capacity and Technological Edge

The A3 line at Samsung Display, responsible for creating OLED panels for both iPhones and iPads, can produce 135,000 units monthly. On the other hand, LG Display’s E6 lines can only turn out 60,000 units per month in total. Apple’s decision hinged on this considerable disparity in production volumes. Samsung’s panels utilize a tandem design, offering superior brightness and better power efficiency, suitable for high-performance devices.

The next models of iPad Air and iPad mini may use single-stack LTPS (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon) panels. These are not as advanced as the double-stack LTPO panels found in iPad Pro models; however, they help keep manufacturing expenses lower. This aligns with Apple’s strategy of balancing cost and performance.

Market Impact and Future Prospects

The shift to OLED panels in the iPad Air might occur earlier than anticipated, possibly by 2026. Analysts view this as part of Apple’s broader goal to enhance display quality across its products. Reports are speculative but consistent with Apple’s ongoing efforts to pave the way for improved user experiences.

By 2026, Apple’s OLED range could broaden considerably, covering products like the Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad Pro, iPad Air, Mini, and possible foldable devices. Samsung Display, with its robust production capacity, seems like a logical choice for this product expansion.

Last year, Samsung Display shipped between 150-160 million units of iPhone OLEDs from its A3 line, while LG Display managed 52 million units from its E6 line. There’s a projected increase for LG Display, nearing an additional 10 million units this year. Both companies are also anticipated to produce millions of OLED units for the iPad Pro in 2023, with LG Display leading the pack in overall volume.
