OpenAI Expands DALL-E 3 Access to Free ChatGPT Users

OpenAI lets free ChatGPT users create 2 images daily with DALL-E 3, its popular AI image generation model.

OpenAI is expanding its image generation offerings by allowing users on the free tier of ChatGPT to create two images daily with DALL-E 3. In a Xeet on Thursday, OpenAI explains that the feature, previously only accessible to ChatGPT Plus users since its September 2023 introduction, is now gradually becoming available to a wider user base.

Enhanced Prompt Assistance

DALL-E 3 integrates closely with ChatGPT, enhancing users’ ability to craft detailed image generation prompts. The goal is to facilitate a smoother creative process. By using the capabilities of DALL-E 3, ChatGPT can be used to generate images for a specific requests and surface multiple variations for the user to choose from.

The extension of DALL-E 3 to free-tier users is being done in stages. Some users have already started accessing the feature, with reports indicating successful image creation on the ChatGPT Mac app before reaching the daily limit.

Broader OpenAI Activities

Beyond expanding DALL-E 3 access, OpenAI has been active in other areas. Recently, the company published a safety assessment for its GPT-4o model, classifying it as having a “medium” risk level. The evaluation is part of OpenAI’s continuous efforts to address safety issues and promote responsible use of AI.

OpenAI has also strengthened its governance by adding a new member to its board of directors. The appointment comes after the company lost key executives last week. Greg Brockman, who serves as the company’s president and is one of the 11 cofounders, has initiated an extended leave. John Schulman, another cofounder and a key contributor, has transitioned to Anthropic, a company established by former OpenAI researchers. Furthermore, Peter Deng, a product leader with a history at firms like Meta Platforms, Uber, and Airtable, has also left the company.
