Nvidia’s AI Business Faces DOJ Antitrust Probes Over Dominance Concerns

Nvidia is facing dual antitrust probes, one focusing on its acquisition of Run:ai, while the other scrutinizes its alleged monopolistic practices in the AI chip market.

Nvidia is now the focus of two antitrust probes by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) related to its activities in the field of AI. One probe centers on Nvidia’s acquisition of the Israeli startup Run:ai, while the other investigates accusations of monopolistic behavior in the AI chip sector.

Regulatory Concerns Over Run:ai Acquisition

In April, Nvidia completed the purchase of Run:ai, a company developing software to optimize GPU usage for AI applications. While the price wasn’t officially disclosed, it’s estimated to be around $700 million. Run:ai’s technology focuses on enhancing computational efficiency, which is critical given the limited supply and high demand for AI chips. The acquisition has alarmed regulators who are wary of large tech mergers that may reduce competition.

The second investigation examines claims from competitors alleging that Nvidia leverages its dominant position to compel cloud providers into preferring Nvidia products over alternative options. There are also accusations that Nvidia charges higher prices for networking gear to those opting for competitors’ AI chips, such as AMD and Intel. Holding about 70 to 95 percent of the AI chip market, Nvidia’s dominance has caught the attention of regulatory bodies worldwide.

Company Position and Market Impact

Nvidia says it is committed innovation and legal compliance, and is ready to cooperate with regulatory authorities. The company briefly surpassed Microsoft in June as the world’s most valued firm, driven by the increasing demand for AI technology.

These inquiries are part of a broader regulatory effort to scrutinize the fast-growing AI industry over potential concerns like national security, consumer fraud, and civil rights issues. A significant worry is that a few tech giants may monopolize the AI sector, similar to what has occurred in e-commerce and social media.

Focus on CUDA and AI Foundry

Nvidia’s CUDA software, exclusive to its GPUs, is under regulatory examination. The exclusivity raises concerns among officials and competitors due to its critical role in accelerated computing. Moreover, Nvidia’s AI Foundry platform, designed as an all-inclusive solution for AI model creation, further reinforces its market position.
