Amazon Web Services (AWS) has revealed plans to phase out Cloud9, CodeCommit, and CloudSearch, among other services. According to Jeff Barr, Amazon Web Services Chief Evangelist, the company will stop onboarding new users for these tools but will continue to support existing customers.
Transition for Cloud9 IDE
Cloud9, an integrated development environment (IDE) hosted in the cloud, has been favored for coding, debugging, and running programs through a browser interface. However, AWS is now redirecting developers to use AWS IDE Toolkits or CloudShell, which are poised to offer enhanced features and seamless integration with other AWS resources.
After giving it a lot of thought, we made the decision to discontinue new access to a small number of services, including AWS CodeCommit.
While we are no longer onboarding new customers to these services, there are no plans to change the features or experience you get today,…

AWS’s managed source control service CodeCommit, which supports private Git repositories, is also being retired. Users of CodeCommit have been advised to move their repositories to alternative Git services such as GitHub or GitLab. AWS has provided guidance on migration techniques, including cloning repositories or mirroring branches.
Sunsetting CloudSearch
CloudSearch, a service for setting up and scaling search capabilities for websites and applications, is also on the list for discontinuation. AWS is encouraging customers to switch to OpenSearch Service, which delivers more sophisticated search functionalities and scalability.
AWS will also discontinue other services including S3 Select, SimpleDB, Forecast, Data Pipeline, Amazon QLDB, and CodeStar. This broader streamlining initiative aims to focus AWS’s resources on its key services, enhancing their overall cloud offerings.
Transition Support for Customers
During this transition period, AWS will assist customers in migrating to other solutions. The company is publishing guides to facilitate these shifts, aiming to reduce disruptions. The phase-out process will occur gradually over several months, with continuous support provided by AWS.
