New Microsoft 365 Backup Services Aim to Improve Business Data Recovery

New Microsoft 365 backup services for OneDrive, SharePoint, and Exchange offer faster recovery times, third-party integrations, and pay-as-you-go pricing.

In an effort to enhance data recovery for Microsoft 365 users, Microsoft has rolled out two new services: Microsoft 365 Backup and Microsoft 365 Backup Storage. These tools are designed to expedite data recovery for OneDrive, SharePoint, and Exchange users.

Accelerated Recovery Speeds

Microsoft 365 Backup provides a direct backup and restore mechanism, offering more frequent recovery points and reduced recovery times. According to Microsoft, data restoration can be up to 20 times faster than conventional methods, significantly improving business continuity.

Integration with Third-Party Solutions

Microsoft 365 Backup Storage supports third-party software developers in building applications using its APIs. This facilitates additional functionality through integrations with companies like AvePoint, Cohesity, Commvault, Rubrik, Veeam, and Veritas, all of which are already supporting this new service.

Both backup services are accessible via the Microsoft 365 admin center and follow a pay-as-you-go pricing model. Detailed setup instructions and pricing are available on Microsoft’s website. The introduction of these services follows a recent disruption caused by a CrowdStrike security update, highlighting the importance of reliable backup solutions.

Collaboration and Future Plans

Microsoft is actively working with various software companies and expects more partners to join. The firm highlights Microsoft 365 Backup Storage as the preferred method for fast data restoration, leveraging third-party expertise to enhance service features and usability.

Microsoft 365 emphasizes high availability, disaster recovery, security, and data privacy. With the rise of ransomware attacks, there’s an increasing demand for extended self-service recovery capabilities. Microsoft 365 Backup retains data within its trust boundary, minimizing security risks and limiting excessive data access by third-party applications.

Microsoft 365 Backup is offered as a standalone pay-as-you-go service with no extra license requirements. Independent software vendors can develop applications using the Microsoft 365 Backup Storage APIs, ensuring quick data recovery to restore business operations post-incident.
