Anaconda has rolled out a new feature for Microsoft Excel users, enabling the execution of Python code directly on local machines. The capability is part of the public beta release of Anaconda Code within the Anaconda Toolbox for Excel, removing the dependence on cloud-based services.
Enhanced User Control
Previously, integrating Python in Excel meant depending on Microsoft’s cloud services. Executing Python code and retrieving results, such as data visualizations, happened via the cloud. Last month, Microsoft brought a Python editor to Excel. The Anaconda Toolbox changes this by allowing Python code to run locally, utilizing WebAssembly technology. Using the feature eliminates the need for additional installations and complex setups, offering more control over Python environments.
The Anaconda Toolbox aims to enhance productivity and data management in Excel with the following features:
- Anaconda Assistant: This AI-driven tool analyzes tables and suggests data handling techniques. It maintains a history that carries across workbooks for consistent code usage.
- Code Snippet Management: Facilitates writing, saving, and sharing Python code snippets within Excel, aiding collaboration and efficiency.
- Advanced Visualizations: Offers templates and libraries for robust data visualizations that integrate into Excel worksheets.
- Streamlined Data Handling: Data connectors enable access, analysis, and sharing of data within Excel or Anaconda.cloud notebooks, with improved versioning for accessing the latest datasets
Excel users have long prioritized security, shareability, and reproducibility. Anaconda Code addresses these by enabling local Python execution securely, without needing separate installations or complex environments. The capability bridges traditional spreadsheet use with advanced coding practices, expanding access to Python’s extensive ecosystem while maintaining Excel’s inherent strengths.
Community-Driven Approach
The development of Anaconda Code reflects feedback from both Python in Excel users and the open-source Python community. A localized Python experience is intended to be accessible, user-friendly, and secure, aligning with Anaconda’s commitment to its user base.
Currently available for free in its public beta phase, the Anaconda Toolbox can be downloaded from Microsoft’s add-in marketplace. The development marks a significant advancement for Excel users, allowing them to harness Python’s power without cloud reliance.
