Microsoft recently rolled out the public preview of Windows Admin Center v2, introducing a suite of enhancements aimed at security, performance, and user experience under the banner “Modernized Gateway.” IT administrators should note this build should not be used in production environments, as it is not compatible with the generally available version 2311 and earlier.
Upgraded to .NET Core 8 and Added HTTP/2 Support
One major update for Windows Admin Center in v2 is the shift from .NET Core 6 to .NET Core 8, which aims to strengthen security. Additionally, HTTP/2 support has been implemented to minimize latency, thereby improving application responsiveness. All of the backend enhancements are set to offer quicker load times, streamlining administrative tasks.
The virtual machine management tool within Windows Admin Center v2 has seen several improvements. Also, the removal of the runtime pipeline boosts responsiveness, and the default interface now shows fewer columns for a cleaner look. Users who prefer the former layout can opt for “Detailed Mode.” Integration with Azure Site Recovery has also been refined to facilitate easier usability.
Installer Options and Data Transfer
The installer now includes more customization options, such as network access settings, trusted hosts selection, and specifying an FQDN for the gateway machine. A new data migration process requires user intervention for four specific items, ensuring user and environment data transition to the new build.
Windows Admin Center v2 build embraces a microservice architecture, initiating one main process for the application and additional sub-processes for specific tasks. For users, the results are more flexibility, scalability, and robustness. The backend has transitioned to the ASP.NET Core Kestrel web server, prioritizing high performance, lightweight operations, and robust security with support for HTTP/2.
New Settings Interface and Extension Updates
The settings interface has received an overhaul with new blades for Access and Shared Connections. The in-app update functionality has been removed. Gateway plug-in extensions must now be updated to the .NET Core framework and be written as ASP.NET MVC controllers. Most solution and tool extensions will experience minimal impact but should still undergo testing.
The new version offers three installation modes: express localhost, express remote, and custom setups, each providing different configuration levels. Detailed instructions for uninstalling and reinstalling the v2 build are provided in case of issues. Migrating to the new version requires inputting proxy credentials, WebSocket Origin configuration, Azure registration, and extensions.
The general availability of Windows Admin Center v2 is projected for the end of 2024. Users are encouraged to test the build and provide feedback to guide future enhancements.
