Microsoft Employees Get Cash Bonuses Despite Layoffs

Over the last 18 months, Microsoft has laid off thousands of employees, but is now issuing hefty bonuses to workers.

Microsoft has opted to provide a special one-time cash bonus to its workforce in recognition of their contributions over the last fiscal year. According to a report from GeekWire. The decision comes after the company reported strong financial results, marking a notable end to its 2024 fiscal year.

Employee Recognition and Financial Performance

In a memo sent by Kathleen Hogan, Microsoft’s Chief People Officer, staff were commended for their exceptional work and the significant impact of their efforts. Hogan noted the team’s impressive execution and innovative achievements. The cash bonuses are supplementary to the usual annual bonuses, ranging from 10 to 25 percent of an employee’s regular bonus, with lower-tier employees receiving a higher proportion for fairness.

While the total amount set aside for these bonuses was not disclosed, it is suggested that employees could receive substantial sums, possibly amounting to thousands of dollars each. The bonus decision follows Microsoft’s revenue of $64.7 billion for the last quarter of the 2024 fiscal year. Despite these financial gains, Microsoft has executed multiple rounds of layoffs throughout 2023 and this year. In January, 1,900 employees in the gaming division were laid off, and the company closed three internal game development studios, impacting numerous workers. The Mixed Reality and Azure teams also faced cuts during this period.

Broader Implications

Microsoft’s cash rewards may boost morale among current employees but are unlikely to mitigate the concerns of those affected by the layoffs. Despite strong financial results and increasing stock values, various company divisions, including gaming and mixed reality, have seen significant job cuts. It seems the layoffs are part of Microsoft’s strategy to hone its operational focus on critical growth sectors.

Executives will not receive these special cash awards. The distribution of these bonuses is scheduled for September. While Microsoft no longer publicly reports its Seattle-area headcount, it employed over 50,000 in the region four years ago and has globally expanded from 156,000 to more than 230,000 employees in the same timeframe.

Impact of Generative AI and Financial Reserves

The rising prominence of generative artificial intelligence has considerably lifted Microsoft’s market valuation, at times exceeding $3 trillion. By June 30, the company held more than $75 billion in cash, equivalents, and short-term investments, reduced from $111 billion the previous year, attributed to the $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision-Blizzard. Microsoft has faced criticism over security issues, including a recent CrowdStrike-related incident affecting Windows systems worldwide. Additionally, a recent outage impacted the Microsoft 365 service. Besides the special bonuses, the company will continue to fund traditional merit-based raises, regular bonuses, and stock awards this year.
