Meta AI Faces Scrutiny For Denying Trump Assassination Attempt

After Meta AI claimed there was no shooting attempt on Donald Trump, the company says the error was down to hallucination.

Meta’s AI assistant has recently come under fire for incorrectly asserting that there was no attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a rally. In response to the error, Meta has written a blog post explaining what happened, attributing the mistake to an AI hallucination. The incident has brought to light the broader issue of “hallucinations” within generative AI systems, something that Joel Kaplan, Meta’s global head of policy, has openly acknowledged.

If you are unfamiliar with the term, AI hallucinations occur when an AI model generates incorrect or misleading information presented as fact. It’s like the AI is “making things up.” Hallucinations can happen for various reasons, including a lack of training data for the AI model, an inability for the AI to take new information (known as “Overfitting”), or a misunderstanding of the prompts given to the AI by the user.

AI’s Flawed Response and Meta’s Steps

Originally programmed to sidestep questions about the Trump rally incident, Meta’s AI had its restrictions lifted after public demand. Despite this adjustment, the AI continued to misinform, sometimes completely denying the event. Kaplan labeled these responses as “unfortunate” and assured that the company is actively working on resolving such errors. The difficulties in providing accurate real-time information stem from the AI’s training data, which might not always be up-to-date or fully comprehensive.

These types of responses are referred to as hallucinations, which is an industry-wide issue we see across all generative AI systems, and is an ongoing challenge for how AI handles real-time events going forward,” continues Kaplan, who runs Meta’s lobbying efforts. “Like all generative AI systems, models can return inaccurate or inappropriate outputs, and we’ll continue to address these issues and improve these features as they evolve and more people share their feedback.”

Industry-Wide Challenge

The challenge of AI hallucinations is not unique to Meta. Google’s Search autocomplete feature has also faced scrutiny for similar inaccuracies, with accusations of censoring information related to the assassination attempt. Former President Trump has alleged that both Meta and Google are attempting to manipulate public perception and has advocated for measures against these companies.

Generative AI systems, including those by Meta, have inherent tendencies to produce incorrect information. This occurs because large language models generate content based on patterns in their training data, which may sometimes be flawed. Companies have attempted to address this by anchoring AI responses with high-quality and real-time data, yet the problem remains.

In June, OpenAI’s Whisper speech-to-text model was found in a study by Cornell University to fabricate content and surface violent language. Last September, Google’s AI integration in Gmail was generating fake email conversations that never happened. These are just two examples, but there are plenty of incidents of AI fails, sometimes funny and sometimes more serious. 

Enhancing AI Accuracy

Tech giants, including Meta, are continuously refining their AI technologies to minimize errors. Kaplan stressed the importance of ongoing improvements, acknowledging that generative AI can generate inappropriate or incorrect outputs. Meta says it is committed to tackling these challenges as the technology evolves, integrating user feedback into the development process.

This incident highlights the significant hurdles the tech industry faces in making AI systems reliable, especially regarding real-time events. As AI integration into daily life increases, ensuring the accuracy and appropriateness of AI outputs is a pressing concern. The issue with Meta’s AI assistant underscores the need for ongoing efforts to enhance the dependability of advanced technologies.
