Adobe Releases Illustrator Beta for ARM Windows Devices

Adobe is embracing Windows on ARM with support for Illustrator and InDesign, with Premiere Pro for ARM coming this years.

Adobe has rolled out a beta version of Illustrator tailor-made for Windows devices featuring ARM processors. Previously, users operating ARM-based Windows computers had to depend on emulation to access Illustrator.

Now, Creative Cloud subscribers using devices like the Surface Pro 8 or Surface Laptop 4 can take advantage of this native version. While emulation allowed usage, it often resulted in reduced performance. This native support provides improved efficiency and a better user experience.

Broader Adobe ARM Support

Illustrator joins Photoshop and Lightroom as part of Adobe’s adaptation efforts for ARM-based Windows. Additionally, Adobe has announced that Premiere Pro will also be receiving ARM-native support soon, reflecting the company’s ongoing efforts to cater to ARM-based systems. Furthermore, the company also announced its InDesign feature is coming to Windows on ARM machines

Older ARM-based equipment, such as the Surface Pro 9 5G, will also benefit from the new Illustrator beta. Users can determine if an application runs natively or emulated by checking the Architecture column in the Task Manager under the Details tab.

Adobe’s Persistent ARM Strategy

Adobe has supported Windows on ARM from the beginning, although initial versions had stability challenges, particularly with Photoshop. Over time, Adobe has addressed these issues. Lightroom is another Creative Cloud app running on Windows ARM PCs, including those with Snapdragon chips.

The beta release of Illustrator holds significant importance for graphic designers depending on one of the leading vector graphics tools. Native ARM support on Illustrator will enhance the creation of scalable designs across various media.

Despite missing the initial July beta launch for Premiere Pro, Adobe’s roadmap still includes ARM-native support. For those in video editing, DaVinci Resolve 19 is available with native ARM support. Additionally, other major applications like Slack and browsers such as Google Chrome have adopted native ARM support, enhancing the utility of ARM-based Windows laptops.
