Microsoft has modified Bing’s search interface by incorporating AI generated summaries that now take precedence over the usual search results. This functionality is currently available only for a set of specific queries and is designed to offer comprehensive responses directly within the search results.
AI-Generated Summaries Take Center Stage
In the revised Bing interface, AI-generated summaries are prominently displayed, providing detailed answers to user inquiries. For instance, Microsoft gives an example of a search for “What is a spaghetti western?” that produces a summary defining it as a subgenre of western films made by Italian filmmakers. The summary is coupled with bullet points covering essential attributes, historical context, notable films, and related multimedia. Microsoft has released previews of this updated search interface, highlighting its potential to present extensive information instantly.
However, the revamped layout raises usability concerns. The AI-generated summaries occupy a majority of the search results space, relegating traditional links to a narrow side column. This adjustment might inconvenience users who prefer browsing a variety of search results. Furthermore, limiting search descriptions to only two lines could hinder users’ ability to quickly scan through the first page of results.
Comparison with Google’s AI Overviews
Microsoft’s strategy has similarities to Google’s AI Overviews, which also feature AI-generated summaries at the top of search results. However, Google’s implementation has been criticized for containing inaccuracies, requiring manual corrections. The company has since reduced the presence of the feature. Microsoft claims that its new layout, which integrates Bing with both large and small language models, sustains the number of website clicks and supports a healthy web ecosystem.
At present, Microsoft is test-driving the AI-powered search with a fraction of user queries. Sample results, like a query about the lifespan of elephants, display a primary summary, followed by relevant videos and additional details. This gradual rollout lets Microsoft gather feedback and make improvements before a broader release. Users eager to experience the new generative search feature must wait, as it is not yet universally available for all Bing users.
Microsoft emphasizes that the AI-generated summaries are meant to complement rather than replace content from traditional news or web publishers. The objective is to enhance the search experience by providing quicker, more comprehensive answers. As this feature develops, it will be interesting to observe how it stacks up against Google’s AI Overview and whether Microsoft can sidestep the issues faced by Google.
