Meta has unveiled a series of updates for its AI services, which include expanding the reach of the Meta AI assistant. The AI assistant, which is integrated into WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook, is now operational in 22 countries. Recent additions include Cameroon and six Latin American nations—Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru. The company also released Llama 3.1, its latest AI model aimed at challenging the leading AI models from OpenAI and Google.
Language Expansion and Privacy Issues
Despite this growth, Meta AI’s services have not been extended to the European Union. Meanwhile, the assistant supports more languages, adding French, German, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Rob Sherman, Meta’s deputy chief privacy officer, disclosed to the Financial Times that the EU’s privacy regulators have advised the company to stop training future AI models using data sourced from EU users.
Meta AI provides a suite of services designed to enhance user engagement and operational efficiency across its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. These services encompass conversational assistance for natural interactions, image generation for creative content, and broad accessibility through devices like Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and Oculus VR.
Additionally, Meta AI supports business applications by improving customer service with AI chatbots, optimizing marketing through analytics, enhancing security with threat detection, and refining manufacturing and logistics processes.
Launch of Llama 3.1 405B
Meta is inviting users to try out Llama 3.1 405B, its latest and most sophisticated open-source model. The company claims that Llama 405B competes with top AI models in areas like general knowledge, steerability, mathematics, tool use, and multilingual translation. Currently, Llama 3.1 405B can be accessed on WhatsApp and the website meta.ai in the U.S.
