Adobe’s Brings Improved Firefly Vector AI Features to Illustrator and Photoshop

Adobe is leveraging its latest Firefly Image models to boost AI capabilities in its popular design software products.

Adobe has introduced a suite of new artificial intelligence features across its Illustrator and Photoshop platforms, aimed at streamlining the creative process for designers. These tools, powered by Adobe’s Firefly Vector 2 AI model, are now available in public beta.

Generative Shape Fill and Text to Pattern Arrive in Illustrator

Illustrator has incorporated the Generative Shape Fill tool, which allows users to generate intricate, scalable designs within any selected shape using text prompts. Another addition, Text to Pattern, lets designers create personalized vector patterns, ideal for uses such as wallpaper designs. The Style Reference function aids in maintaining design uniformity by producing outputs that emulate existing styles.

Among Illustrator’s new features is the Dimension tool, which auto-includes sizing information in projects. The Mockup feature permits design previews on 3D products, and Retype converts static text within images into editable text. Details of these enhancements are outlined on Adobe’s blog, and are aimed at accelerating the creative workflows of designers.

Advanced AI Capabilities in Photoshop

Photoshop’s latest updates are also notable. The Generate Image tool, driven by Adobe’s Firefly Image 3 Model, is now part of both the desktop and web versions. This tool enables users to create images from scratch via text descriptions with the updated generative AI tool. The Enhance Detail feature within Generative Fill enhances clarity and detail in larger images. Moreover, the Selection Brush tool, simplifying object separation with a brushstroke, is now available.

Adobe underscores that its Firefly models are trained on licensed content sourced from its stock platform. However, some creative professionals voice concerns that such AI-driven automation could impact job security within the design industry. Adobe has reassured users of its “creator-friendly AI” stance, ensuring no customer content is used for model training without permission.

Broader AI Integration Strategy

Deepa Subramaniam, Vice President of Product Marketing for Adobe Creative Cloud, emphasizes that Adobe’s goal is to support creative professionals in realizing their visions, positioning generative AI as a tool to “enhance, not replace, human creativity and expression.” Adobe’s ongoing AI enhancements demonstrate a strategy to deepen AI integration within its creative tools.

Alongside the generative AI features, Adobe has added the “Enhance Detail” feature in Photoshop’s Generative Fill for improved sharpness and detail. In Illustrator, the Generative Shape Fill tool creates detailed vectors tailored to a designer’s unique style, and the Enhanced Text to Pattern feature offers customized vector patterns. The Style Reference tool allows for outputs that match existing styles, while the Mockup tool delivers high-quality prototype visuals for products.
