Google has expanded the integration of its Gemini AI into its Workspace platform, embedding advanced generative AI features into applications like Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drive, and Gmail.
New AI Tools in Google Docs and Slides
End users can access the Gemini AI side panel independently by clicking the “Ask Gemini” button in the top right corner of Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive on web platforms. This feature bypasses the need for admin configuration, allowing for immediate use without additional administrative tasks.
Users of Google Docs can now benefit from Gemini AI’s capabilities to generate summaries, assist in brainstorming, and create content derived from existing documents. Google Slides users will find that the AI can not only generate new slides and summarize presentations but also produce custom images, enhancing both efficiency and creativity.
Enhancements in Google Drive and Gmail
Gmail users will see benefits such as automated email drafting, suggested responses, and thread summarization, which streamline inbox management. These features leverage the advanced Gemini 1.5 Pro model, known for its improved context handling and reasoning skills. In Google Drive, the new Gemini AI side panel offers the ability to summarize multiple documents and provide updates on ongoing projects.
Interaction Improvements and User Convenience
To engage with Gemini AI, users can click an “Ask Gemini” button located at the top-right corner of the app. This action opens a side panel featuring initial AI suggestions and a prompt box for user input. The AI also offers follow-up question prompts and feedback options, enhancing user interaction and making the AI experience more intuitive.
For Google Sheets, Gemini AI assists with data management, table creation, formula generation, and task guidance. These functionalities are particularly advantageous for handling large datasets and performing complex calculations.
Availability Timeline
For Rapid Release domains, the rollout began on June 24, 2024, with complete deployment anticipated within a few days. Scheduled Release domains began receiving the update on July 8, 2024, with full feature availability expected over a 15-day period. This feature is available to Google Workspace customers with specific add-ons like Gemini Business and Enterprise, Gemini Education and Education Premium, and Google One AI Premium.
Google has made Gemini AI available to students in over 100 countries as part of its broader educational initiative. The Gemini AI chatbot now also supports YouTube Music playback, and an Android app has been launched in the UK and Europe. Despite these advancements, Google advises that users should not rely solely on AI-generated content, acknowledging variability in AI responses.
